Estelle: 'Wait A Minute (Just A Touch)'

"When I need things to happen," Estelle recently explained to DS, "I need them to happen now." The West London rapper is a shrewd judge of her own character: in the two-and-a-half years since she last troubled the charts, she's moved to the States, signed to John Legend's record label and booked studio time with the Who's Who of urban hitmakers: Wyclef Jean, Swiss Beatz, Kanye West, will.i.am and Mark Ronson have all supplied beats for Shine, her upcoming sophomore album. Well, it kept them away from those pesky Pussycat Dolls, we suppose.

Lead single 'Wait A Minute (Just A Touch)' positively bristles with intent, as Estelle boasts about her sexual prowess over parptastic brass samples, brooding synths and will.i.am's jazz-inspired rhythm track. Crucially, she's lost none of her lyrical flair since the days of '1980', instructing her man to "wrap it up" because she "ain't carrying his embryo". This single's got the merest whiff of Lauryn Hill's 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' about it - A Good Thing, naturally - but Estelle's greatest trick is to make the man behind 'My Humps' sound understated and classy.
