Jack Peñate: 'Have I Been A Fool'

He might have been slightly overshadowed by Kate Nash in the glottal-stop pop stakes, but Blackheath's leading rockabilly-inspired singer-songwriter isn't doing too badly at all. Jack Peñate has already scored two top 20 hits this year, while his debut album Matinée stormed into the top ten a couple of months ago.

'Have I Been A Fool' finds the young whippersnapper getting all remorseful about a girlie who's got the wrong end of the romantic stick (not in a dirty way). "I led you on but leading's wrong," he admits over a frantic skiffle-pop beat, stabbing guitar riffs and jerky piano chords. The result? A minor-key pop gem that manages to be memorable without mentioning anyone being sick on anybody else's trainers.
