Sugababes: 'Change'

It's quite appropriate for an outfit that's altered members more often than some folk have changed their under-crackers (OK, that might be a wee exaggeration, but can you name every Sugababe past and present?) to name their latest release 'Change'. The title track from their recent number one album is sure to be there-or-thereabouts in the battle for the Christmas number one spot, but it's probably lacking that little bit of X Factor (Do you see what we did there?) to nab the festive top spot.

A gentle, sweeping lament that lets the girls sprinkle their extra-tight harmonies over plinky-plonky keys and lots of lovely 'whoosh!' effects, it's a million miles from the dirty-gal bite of 'Freak Like Me' or bump 'n' grind filth of 'Push The Button'. Nevertheless, it should appeal to those who appreciate the 'Babes for their vocal abilities rather than their ample curves. Though nothing groundbreaking, 'Change' certainly makes a mockery of the Spice Girls' comeback single. Geri, Mel, Vic and the rest - this is how we do sophisticated pop ballads these days.
