Orson: 'Broken Watch'

'Culture Vultures' LP

Oh Orson, where did it all go wrong? In summer 2006, the Hollywood rockers were Everyone's New Favourite Band: their debut single 'No Tomorrow' topped the charts; its parent album Bright Idea repeated the trick; and frontman Jason Pebworth impressed us all with his nice line in hats. Just over a year later, both Culture Vultures, the band's follow-up album, and 'Ain't No Party', its lead single, failed to crack the top 20. Pebworth, at least, still had those lovely hats.

'Broken Watch', Culture Vultures' second single, takes its musical cues from the poppy end of early eighties new wave - think The Police at their least reggae-ish, The Pretenders at their most chipper. All jerky guitar riffs, propulsive drum beats and cascading melodies, it's a decent enough single, but its chorus doesn’t quite pack enough punch to reverse Orson's decline.
