Hot Chip: 'Ready For The Floor'

'Made In The Dark' LP

It's always going to be hard to avoid disappointment when listening to a new Hot Chip record. 2006's 'Over and Over' was such a piece of tumbling electro-pop perfection that it never grated, no matter how many times it was re-released. Then they went and told us that Kylie Minogue wrote them a song filled with farmyard noises and rejected it from their forthcoming Made In The Dark album. Anything ranking slightly under the level or 'genius' is surely going to underwhelm.

It's lucky for the cockney dance geeks, therefore, that they saved a little bit of their 'Over and Over' magic dust for 'Ready For The Floor', Made In The Dark's first single. While segments of their debut LP, The Warning, bordered on the dull, 'Ready...' suggests they've learned their lesson and are ready to up their game. A grower rather than a sparkly pop show-er, it gradually picks up momentum amidst a flurry of Gameboy bleeps and synth crunches, while Alexis Taylor gently hums about wanting to have a dance with us. As the chorus blossoms into a sparkling collection of swirling beats that have more than a whiff of 'Sexy Boy'-era Air to them, it's nigh on impossible to resist his requests.
