Sheryl Crow: 'Love Is Free'

'Detours' LP

Following the relative failure of 2005's Wildflower, which became the least successful album of her career, Sheryl Crow has reunited with Bill Bottrell, the producer of her landmark debut. A wise move - if 'Love Is Free' is anything to go by, the Tuesday Night Music Club honcho has helped Crow to regain her old deftness of touch.

With its gentle, summery jangle and "money's got no hold on me" sentiments, 'Love Is Free' isn't a world away from one of Jack Johnson's more upbeat moments. As ever, Crow indulges her fondness for a big, classically-constructed pop hook, filling 'Love Is Free' with a steady stream of melodic thrills. Though perhaps a little too slight to rank amongst her best singles, it shows there's plenty of life in Crow's guitar-strumming fingers yet.
