Alphabeat: 'Fascination'
Among the predictable line-up of mucky-haired guitar bands and Winehouse wannabes, one band stuck out like a sore thumb on most people's 'Tips For 2008' lists. That band was Alphabeat. Already massive in Denmark, the day-glo popstrels will soon be filling the gap between The B-52s and Wham! in your record collection that you never knew needed filling. Their debut UK release 'Fantastic 6' caused a stir last year thanks to its high-octane Disney Club-style pop, while the band showed plenty of personal confidence by snubbing a possible Spice Girls' support slot.

'Fascination', Alphabeat's calling card, features more frills and tassels than Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen's entire wardrobe. Like an explosion in a late 80's recording studio, it booms out of the speakers with a sack-load of clattering drums and the best use of a tambourine since Andrew Ridgeley stopped mucking around behind George Michael's back. Destined for great things, Alphabeat bridge the divide between the daft, camp fun of Mika and the uber-cool disco stomps of Justice. A timely replacement for the dour charts hits of current pop darling Gary Barlow, you could find yourself shaking a tail-feather to Alphabeat very soon.

It's not a bad song, at least it's different from most things in the chart...
