Futureheads: 'Beginning of the Twist'
The music industry is a cruel and unforgiving beast. The Futureheads' 2006 release News and Tributes was a brooding masterpiece that should have seen their star rise above their copycat peers. Instead, it was snubbed by the public and the Sunderland four-piece found themselves without a label come the end of the year. Luckily, Jaff, Ross, Dave and Barry are made of stronger stuff than most, and after holing themselves up in Andalusia, set up their own record company (Nul Records) in an attempt to prove the doubters wrong.

Kick-started by the band's unique brand of taut, new-wave riffing, 'Beginning of the Twist' is the group's battle cry, announcing their return to the music scene. While the band haven't shelved any of their original character - there's still the classic multi-vocal harmonies they served up a treat on 'Hounds of Love' - they sound, bigger, bolder and heavier than before. 'Twist' cleverly uses lyrics that could refer to the band's discontent with the record industry or equally act as an allegory for a confused relationship, displaying their usual brand of wit and quirkiness. With a glorious, guitar-crunching chorus, it stampedes like a herd of rhinoceros on everything else released so far this year and (fingers crossed) will spark some deserved commercial success.
