Elbow: 'Grounds For Divorce'

'The Seldom Seen Kid' LP

Too often the bridesmaid and never the bride, Elbow have spent much of their career playing second fiddle to the likes of Coldplay and Snow Patrol in the melancholic, expansive indie rock stakes. Their cynical Northern humour, lyrical bleakness and uncompromising attitude to music-making have often scared off audiences, reducing them to also-rans rather than chart-conquerors.

New single 'Grounds For Divorce', taken from their forthcoming album The Seldom Seen Kid, is yet another example of what the world has been missing out on by choosing Chris Martin's beige blandness over spikier fare from the Mancunian troubadours. Guy Garvey's black humour - "I've been working on a cocktail called Grounds For Divorce" - shines through on this inspired tribute to songwriter and band friend Bryan Glancy, who died in 2006 at the age of 39. Perhaps the loudest and most 'rocking' track in Elbow’s career, the combination of infectious riffing and emotional wrangling makes this a call-to-arms that's both joyous and cathartic.
