Sam Sparro: 'Black and Gold'

What it is, however, is a brilliantly catchy, hypnotic slice of electropop. As a small army of synths crackle and pulse like a live wire, Sparro slowly unleashes the full power of his deep, soulful voice, pondering the meaning of life while staring into the black (the night sky, apparently) and gold (the stars). On this evidence, Sparro has more than enough talent to fulfil those grand ambitions.

I think his lyrics about "if vision is the only validation, then most of my life isn't real" also references how his life is about music, which is something heard/felt but not seen...

This song is so true! It's actually about his search for God and his faith in God. The beginning lines of the song are reference to evolution. "If the fish swam out of the ocean and grew legs and started walking, and the apes climbed down from the trees and grew tall and they started talking"...etc. "The stars fell out of the sky" is probably in reference to the Big Bang theory. The second stanza talks about how he can sense that God is there. "I sense the weight of something beyond and I don't see what I can feel." He knows that God is all around him, he just can't see God. But then he goes on to say, "if vision is the only validation, then most of my life isn't real", probably talking about how it isn't always possible to see what you know exists. The wind, for instance, is invisible, as are atoms, which make up everything. Then, of course, you have things like love, which can't be seen but can be shown through actions, even though you can't see the actual emotion. If vision is the only validation for things like love, then really, love does not exist. In the song you hear that he's talking to somebody. "Now I'm looking for a reason why You really set my world into motion." He's asking God why the world even exists. The chorus is also directly talking to God. The line "Cuz if You're not really here, then the stars don't even matter, now we're filled to the top with fear that it's all just a bunch of matter" is talking about how if God doesn't really exist, then nothing matters. If God doesn't exist, then everything in the world is just a bunch of matter, i.e. something with weight and mass. The rest of the chorus, "Cuz if you're not really here, then I don't wanna be, either. I want to be next to you." talks about how if God isn't really here, he doesn't want to be here either. He wants to be next to God, he wants to be where God is.

It's nice to know that some artists think of the listener before they share! This song is beautiful. The music and his voice are captivating but I have to be honest- the title is exactly how I feel when this song is through, as it makes me think of the loved ones i've lost. It's hard to imagine life without the people that make your world go round. And yet I know I'll never tire of it.

Saw him on Rove, googled him the next day and have an order that needs to be picked up at my record store. I love it. I can't stop playing it. The intelligence of the lyrics rocks my socks. Love it.

This song makes me thing of his view of religion. First he talks about evolution, then he's like if your not really here then the stars don't even matter........ If vision is the only validation then most of my life isn't real. Could this mean he's saying how he used to believe in heavenly beings but now he's becoming skeptical? eeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhh....... i don't really care what it's about, it's a great song! very catchy! =] P.S. THIS IS NOT MEANT TO OFFEN ANYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This song is certainly catchy, tuneful, soulful and impecabily delivered. The lyrics speak without patronising and the melody, hamony and tonailty all work together to best showcase a great voice singing some of the best lyrics (verses, the chorus is a little odd, but I can forgive hime this as it remains easily one of the most catchy chrouses in current music) I have EVER heard. I eagerly await Mr. Sparrow's nex release. How often does an artist get an average of 5 stars on readers comments? Says it all really doesn't it!

Superb - his voice is quite unique and the beat of the song is infectious to say the least. Trouble is - if I'm driving when it comes on the radio, at the part where he ups the temp (the intensity) I want to get out and dance!!!

I heard 'Black and Gold' on a SKY TV documentary called "Every Day Is Raceday" all about a Britcar racing team, it was the theme tune for one of their races. What else has he done, if this tracks anything to go by I want more!

When I was very drunk I wrote down the meaning from this song.. I did not even know about the Annunaki & Enki but the next morning I found this is the oldest relgion on earth written in clay tablets.like WOHOOO. Annunaki means: Those who from Heaven to Earth Came. And they where searching gold. They came with silver things like falling stars. They found Earth and animals, like apes who were black. They used some dna of them. And made them slaves. Then there came humans. Because it was a lot of work to find gold. So I think black & gold, i want to be next to you, when the apes climbed out of the trees and started talking etc.. have a lot in common with this story. But what happened with these gods like Annunaki, nobody knows exactly and it is mystery hihi. Good luck!
