Sam Sparro: 'Black and Gold'
Whether it be first, young, unrequited, lost or sexual, pop songs have a funny habit of talking about love. However, Sydney-born, LA-based Sam Sparro clearly has grander ambitions than the average chart wannabe, describing his debut single 'Black and Gold' as "pretty much existential". He's not being entirely highfalutin; with couplets like: "If vision is the only validation, then most of my life isn't real," this isn't exactly Stock Aitken Waterman fare.

What it is, however, is a brilliantly catchy, hypnotic slice of electropop. As a small army of synths crackle and pulse like a live wire, Sparro slowly unleashes the full power of his deep, soulful voice, pondering the meaning of life while staring into the black (the night sky, apparently) and gold (the stars). On this evidence, Sparro has more than enough talent to fulfil those grand ambitions.
