The Wombats: 'Backfire at the Disco'
They've danced (surely with some irony) to Joy Division and contemplated moving to New York, but now The Wombats are singing about dating woes on 'Backfire at the Disco', the fourth single from their Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation album. Impressively, the Scouse rapscallions have managed to write an instantly likable pop tune about a rather depressing episode: a date that ends with a slap in the face.

'Backfire at the Disco' is one of those songs that will rattle around your head for the rest of the day after you catch it on the radio. Bristling with energy, its infectious chorus and kinetic drumming are supported by "wooh wooh" backing vocals and guitars that jostle to outdo each other. Having blistered out of the tracks at light speed, the track proceeds to throw a bit of a curveball, winding down with an excellent, minute-long instrumental outro - something of a rarity in contemporary pop. The cherry on top of the icing? The CD single even features a worthwhile B-side, a live recording of 'Backfire' with New Order/Joy Division legend Peter Hook on bass. Ace.
