Kenna: 'Out of Control (State of Emotion)'

Kenna is one of those artists whose impeccable connections don't seem to translate into record sales. With Neptunes star Chad Hugo on production duties, Pharrell Williams heading up his record label and Mark Ronson offering him a support slot on his recent tour, it's hard to shake the feeling that the Ethiopian muso should be much bigger than he actually is.

The problem? Though inventive, vibrant and often very catchy, his music has a tendency to slip into the no-man's-land between genres. 'Out of Control (State of Emotion)' is a case in point, mixing Justin Timberlake-style synths, New Order guitar work and a chorus that takes the song into Cure territory. To be fair to Kenna, he manages to pull these disparate elements together impressively, just not in way that suggests "hit".
