Alphabeat: '10,000 Nights'

With their cherubic complexions, endlessly cheery pop songs and endearingly shoddy videos, Alphabeat are a strangely old-fashioned proposition. But next to the plethora of dour, faceless indie bands who've been dominating the charts in recent years, they seem fresh too, maybe even a bit revolutionary.

New single '10,000 Nights' is a charmingly daft pop confection: all pounding piano riffs, singalong choruses and shamelessly cheesy lyrics ("I was not looking for arty-farty love!" goes the opening line). In fact, it sounds like a love song from High School Musical, but a love song from High School Musical performed with genuine elation rather than an eyes 'n' teeth showbiz grin. Remember what your first romance felt like? That's the feeling captured in this song.
