Paul Weller: 'Echoes Round The Sun'/'Have You Made Up Your Mind'

News that Paul Weller is about to release a double album will probably have many running for the hills. Weller rarely strays too far from his well-worn dad-rock path, and with regular cohorts Noel Gallagher and Ocean Colour Scene's Steve Craddock coming along for the ride, it sounds like a serious case of self-indulgence. Fortunately, as this double A-side single proves, it's eminently possible for an old rocker to learn some new tricks.

'Echoes Round The Sun' - a psychedelic stomper - is Weller's most colourful release since his days with the Style Council. Equal parts Jimi Hendrix and Austin Powers, it's groovier than a pair of 60s hotpants. 'Have You Made Up Your Mind' is a more traditional Weller offering, but it's meandering verses are brought to life by a sun-drenched chorus that's jam-packed with glorious harmonies. He may have turned 50 last week, but the Modfather's showing no signs of slowing down with age.
