'Spotlight' on Jennifer Hudson

It's a Ne-Yo/Stargate production... wait, come back! They've actually tried a different sound for this assignment, crafting something smooth, a little bit classy and reminiscent of Toni Braxton in her prime. The lyrics are better than average too, with Jennifer getting to shame a possessive boyfriend on lines like "Are you a guard in a prison? Maximum security?"
The album, as befits the debut from an Oscar-winner, features contributions from anyone who's anyone in modern R&B: Timbaland, R Kelly, Akon, Tricky, John Legend and... err... Diane 'Queen of Power Ballads' Warren. It's due in September.
The video for 'Spotlight' - featuring more sass than the average catwalk - appears below:

I loved the song instantly, but can understand those who are a little reserved about it. It's restrained to be sure, but it's also a grower. Upon repeated listens, you really appreciate how rich and nuanced her vocals are. I think she kind of was in a no win situation to please everyone because had she released a full on vocal throw down, it would have only gotten compared to "And I'm telling you I'm not going." This song was a wise choice to reintroduce Jennifer to radio. It proves you don't have to be the loudest voice in the room all the time to still leave a lasting impression. Trust me on this, this song will be major.
