Mariah: Back on form?

Published Thursday, Jul 10 2008, 14:14 BST | By Nick Levine | 13 comments
We wrote a couple of weeks ago about the floporific chart performance of Mariah Carey's last single. Mimi was gunning for a 19th US No.1 with 'Bye Bye', a schmaltzy ballad "for my peoples who just lost somebody", but funnily enough it stalled at... wait for it... #19. Over here, it barely scraped into the top 30, becoming Mariah's least successful single since 2001. Ouch!

Anyway, we're presuming "failure" isn't a word in Mariah's vocabulary - or at least one that her stylists/PAs/people reportedly employed to guide drinking straws to her lips are allowed to utter in her presence. Consequently, she's moving swiftly on to single number three from her generally very impressive E=MC2 album.

It's called 'I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time' and it ticks all the boxes for a modern-day Mariah smash. Mid-tempo R&B beat? Check. Gushingly romantic lyrics? You betcha. Guest appearance from a trendy rapper? Yup, here's T.I. for ya! And she's nice and restrained with the old vocals too.

Original it ain't, but 'Long Time' does have that touch of class that 'Bye Bye' seemed to lack. It's also got a definite Kanye West feel to it, which makes sense seeing as it was co-produced by DJ Toomp, who contributed to West's Graduation album. The UK release date is September 1.

The video, which shows us exactly what Mariah's new hubbie gets when he comes home at night, appears below.

What do you think of 'I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time'? Will it restore Mariah's chart fortunes? Use the space below to have your say.

I really liked Bye Bye tune it was a great tune and i was really really surprised when i heard it didnt go so well. Her new song Il be lovin u long time is such a great track i think it will do very well. Its got a good summer vibe to it.. Mariah looks great and her voice still sounds incredible. I wish you more number 1's in the world!

at first, I really don't like this song but after a few spins, i realised that this is an awesome track too bad this song isn't a single material compared to "Touch My Body" and "Bye Bye". I would like to see "Migrate" a lil' bit more. Anyways, this song is amazing and hope it'll do good in the UK Singles Charts.

I am absolutely gutted about "Bye Bye" being so relatively unsuccessful but believe it was the wrong choice for the 2nd single. "Migrate" should have been released instead since it is one of the highlights of the album, absolutely sizzling hot and features T-Pain who is so hot and happening at the moment. "Bye Bye" should have been released as an Xmas single due to its deep and profound lyrics and it anthemic qualities. What a wasted effort! However, I assume the press coverage regarding her surprise wedding paired with some bad vocal perfomances in live shows migth have tainted her PR image a bit...I don't know, but I hope "I'll Be Lovin'..." will be a summer banging smash hit. MIMI deserves it as she is one of the best out there.

This is another cheesy yet very lame music video. Makes me wanna say “Put on some clothes you trash!!!”. I’ll Be Loving You Long Time shows Mariah Carey using her alleged diva failings to justify her own mediocrity.

I love I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time, I think it's a brilliant song and one of the best off E=MC2. It could do really well, if Mariah just does a couple more appearances! Seems she's dropped off the radar unfortunately- in terms of music, not marriage.

I Looooove the new Mariah video, can't get enough of her #1 album E=MC2

Bye-Bye was just too sickly, even for the US market...plus she did no promotion for it, and it didn't get much radio play. I wish she'd released 'cruise control' just so the public at large could hear her ridiculous 'Jamaican' accent!!

nope she's washed out, slaggy and although she has a good voice, thinks far too much of herself. Hope she crashes out of the charts again!! GLITTER ANYONE>>>>>

Very summery song (lets hope we get one in the UK) and hopefully it will restore Mariah back to the Top 10 along with her excellent album. I hope she doesn't ignore Migrate, Side Effects or I Stay In Love as possible future singles.

this song is fire! gonna be a massive hit for mariah!

Not sure about restoring chart success. A bit cheesy but as for the comment on her husband....that was just a pure publicity stunt. I think its the world's best kept secret that Mariah "bat's for the other side"! heheheee Good Tune though.

I thought Bye Bye was a great tune! Can't believe it stalled at #30 here in the UK and #19 in the US??? What happened there???? New song is brill but I quite liked Bye Bye 2!
