McFly heading for No.1
Published Tuesday, Jul 15 2008, 16:05 BST | By Nick Levine | 45 comments

It's not a done deal of course, with Dizzee 'n' Calvin and Kid Rock giving good chase behind them, but McFly are in the lead at the moment. This bodes well for new album radio:ACTIVE, which comes free with this Sunday's edition of the Mail on Sunday. radio:ACTIVE, the boys believe, will be the disc to bag them new fans who aren't 15, female and prone to giving themselves ink poisoning by scrawling 'I LUV DOUGIE!' on their wrists. "There are loads of people out there who would love our stuff," Harry from the group told DS recently, "but they've never given us a chance because they pigeonhole us a boyband or something".
Could McFly's plan work? Well, we've heard five tracks from the new album and all but one is stronger than 'One For The Radio', which is certainly a good sign. We're not really meant to write about this, but one song on radio:ACTIVE is a proper fist-pumping stadium anthem that dads across the country will love - as long as they can get over the name on the CD cover. It all depends, we suppose, on how open-minded they're feeling after their coffee and croissants this Sunday.
Do you want McFly to make No.1 on Sunday? What are you hoping for from their new album? Use the space below to have your say.

I think Alan knows that we were not arguing Sophie, it was more of a debate. That's the reason Digital Spy have this section for our views. If Alan thought I was arguing then I do obviously apologise, as I do to anyone who might of slightly been offended by anything or any thoughts of me having an argument on here.

And thank you too Alan, and you don't have to explain your reasoning because you were being unfairly treated, there are others on here saying that they're rubbish but for some reason they were all picking on you. As for the chart position on Sunday and proceeding weeks we'll just have to wait and see. Not commenting on other people's comment goes for everyone (unless of course it's nice) not just adam and alan!

I'm with you Sophie! And I don't judge McFly JUST on their music sales. I was just using that to back up my argument. So I hope McFly enjoy their No.1 this Sunday, cause they wont be there for much longer...

Thank you for agreeing with me Adam I really appreciate it. Both of you are right to be fair, my vote is to stop commenting on other people's comments, because as we've just seen it leads to arguements, lets just comment on Mcfly but more importantly THIS single and only THIS single. Who's with me?

I totally agree with you Sophie, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and lets focus on the music. I think it’s just a little annoying when opinions become mixed up with facts. If people think McFly are ‘useless’ then their entitled to think that, but my point is not to base that opinion on things like single sales, as I’m sure they would not judge every band in this way. It just becomes a little hypocritical to judge McFly in this way, when chances are other bands would not be branded so negatively just based on their record sales.

I think we should all put our handbags away...Alan you just need to settle with the fact that some people DO like them and enjoy their music and don't want them to disappear. Equally others need to stop this personal vendetta against him, he is entitled to his own opinion just like everyone else, and should be allowed to stand up for himself. Now can we all stop trying to score points and concentrate on the music please.

Well, Martin, when the facts are supplied by the Official Charts Company, I do tend to believe them. Ok, lets have a look at McFly's last three singles shall we? 'The Heart Never Lies', entered at No.3, fell to No.22 two weeks later. 'Baby's Coming Back', entered at No.1, fell to No.20 the next week and then No.39 the next week. 'Sorry's Not Good Enough', entered at No.3, then fell to No.20 the next week. Deluded facts, eh Martin? " Extraordinary fanbase " I think not....

Hey Alan, my point was that you surely don’t judge every band on the amount of singles they actually sell? I did read your comments and that’s why I clearly argued that you can’t call a band useless based on their single sales. McFly’s success speaks for itself, as highlighted by Martin, and I’m sure you don’t make judgements of other bands in the same way you do Mcfly. The facts are that Mcfly have and still can shift records, so I’m sure there are loads of bands out there who would kill to be as ‘useless’ as Mcfly.

Guys, there's a rather worrying rumour going round that hmv have well and truly screwed up and that they have lost 3000 orders of the single and 3000 people's money! So if your orders haven't come through the post yet or even if yours have you might want to buy it again, it s just a rumour, so don't blame me if it's not true, but...

The song is good enough to be number one and deserves to be. The cock up HMV have caused though may mean that they have to settle for number 2 which is ridiculous as that Dizee Rascel song is absolutly terrible!

"I'm just recalling facts I have read". Do you believe EVERYTHING you read Alan? Really? The fact of the matter is - they've had seven number ones (and soon to be eight), there fanbase it extraordinary. There touring America for a year soon (rumoured), they've had two number one albums DEBUT at number one. They the youngest band to EVER make it to number one (beating the Beatles), they've done a heck of a lot for charity, and they really (unlike MANY bands and musicians nowadays) care about there fans, and what they think about the music. So, please, don't sit there and state that there pathetic, when you can't even provide a full argument for your deluded "facts".

" At least make a decent argument " eh Adam?? If you had bothered to ready my above comments you'll have seen that they had the lowest selling No.1 of last year which was outsold by a 20 year old Queen record. It was also outsold by 'Tears Dry On Their Own' by Amy Winehouse, which peaked at No.16 and her album had already sold well over a million in the UK. I think that backs up my point fairly well, no?? And no Lily, I haven't done a lot of research into McFly, I'm just recalling facts I have read. And please tell me Adam, how I don't seem to be the "type of guy to judge a band by their single sales, judging by past comments ", cause I'm dying to know!

alan from cork you are entitled to your own opinon and I respect you for it seen as you are being a tiny bit outnumbered, but you seem to know alot about them or have done alot of research for someone who doesn't like them. It may just be common knowledge, but i certainly didn't know. i'm not a huge fan of them but this new stuff does seem a little bit better...

YO Alan from Cork. You don't seem the type of guy, from your past comments, to judge a band by their single sales! So why the big focus on McFLY's single sales?! I bet your one of those guys who loves other bands that don't sell that many records! So please tell me, should all bands who supposedly don't sell that many singles be branded 'useless'? Come on dude, you obviously don't like McFLY, but don't start triping up over your own words. At least make a decent argument!

Dear oh dear oh dear!! After all the previous comments, McFly's track didn't even get to No.1!! Not only this, but it fell nineteen places to No.22 the next week! And on to week three... Well, I'm looking inside the UK top 40 and I can't see it anywhere......no, stil haven't found it. Looks like I'm gonna have to check out the top fifty instead. Ah, here they are!! After just three weeks on release, McFly's track 'One For The Radio' can only scrape to No.46. " But they released their album for free through a national newspaper " I hear all their deluded fans cry. Duffy released her 'Rockferry' a week of two after 'Mercy' hit No.1, and still managed five weeks on top. So there. Suffice to say, McFly's single 'One For The Radio' has bombed. Spectacularly!
