Who should sing the new Bond theme?
Published Thursday, Jul 17 2008, 16:55 BST | By Alex Fletcher | 59 comments
The list of artists tipped to sing the theme tune for the new Bond flick, Quantum of Solace, reads like a Who's Who of modern pop. Amy Winehouse, Beyoncé, Jack White, Duffy, Leona Lewis, The Killers and, as is the case with every 007 film, Robbie Williams have all been linked to the job.
Results in the past have, to put it politely, been mixed. For every Duran Duran or Shirley Bassey, there's been a Chris Cornell or Sheryl Crow making a mess of things. However, this doesn't appear to have put anyone off – actually, they all seem well and truly up for it. Just for fun, we've singled out the four most likely candidates for the job and assessed their Bond movie credentials.
The Hot Favourite: Alicia Keys
The US soul queen has only recently been linked to the movie, but with impressive sales stats on both sides of the Atlantic, she's emerged as the front-runner in recent weeks. While her classy crooning may not be to everyone's tastes, she fits the mould of classic Bond singers like Bassey, Tina Turner and Carly Simon to a tee.
The Safe Option: Duffy
Reports from Pinewood Studios have suggested the Welsh warbler is a "shoo-in" for the Quantum of Solace theme. She may not be the most interesting pick, but with her debut album, Rockferry, selling by the bucket-load, she'd certainly be popular with the public. From Duffy's point of view, a Bond tie-in would be a big helping hand as she continues her bid to crack the States.
The Troublemaker: Amy Winehouse
Winehouse and her old pal Mark Ronson were the obvious choice for Solace following the overwhelming success of her Back To Black album. On past form there's surely no one better, but with her current health problems and recent fist-fighting antics, it seems unlikely that producers would take a risk on the bee-hived singer.
The Wild Card: The Last Shadow Puppets
Arctic Monkey Alex Turner probably wouldn't fancy the attention, but his quaint side project Last Shadow Puppets could yield the coolest Bond theme since Duran Duran and A-Ha in the '80s. The Puppets' debut LP, The Age Of The Understatement, is filled with string-laden, cinematic pop songs that are certainly grand enough to work on the big screen.
Who do you think should record the new Bond theme? Is there anyone we've missed out? Use the space below to have your say.

Personally i think it should be DUFFY........She has the right sounding voice, the right look and is reliable. I love Leona but just dont think this would be a good move for her. As for Amy Winehouse, I love her voice but the chick is a total junkie and completely unreliable.....and The Last Shadow Puppets are a great band but not the right sound for this project......C'mon Duffy!!!!

CHRIS CORNELL! A mess of things? Well, I really don't see how he did that. As far as I can see (& hear), his Bond theme became very popular.

Come on nones better than Amy Winehouse, I mean duffy is good but there's no better option than Amy she fits perfectly in the song because of her style of voice, duffy's is peaceful and kind of boring sometimes, but in this film we need action, pain, mistery, some sexy scratchy-voice and those feelings you have when you listen to Amy. There's no better option, anyway haven't you seen her at T In The Park, she's getting better and better and if she has performed already to thousands of people in these days why not putting her on the song? Don't put Duffy on the song, she's just not going to make it the best, not going to make it succesfull... Definitly my vote is for Amy Winehouse

I'm with whoever suggested David Cook - amazing idea and he could do a great job of it, all haunting power chords and the like. And as for Chris Cornell "making a mess of things", are you deaf?!

Leona Lewis all the way! she has the power in her voice, just like the other legendary theme singers! shirley bassey, tina turner, all iconic divas! leona is amazing, and this film would make millions just for the fact leona sang the song

well for me there are 2 styles in the bond music history: one was led by Shirley Bassey (the balad) and duran duran (the upbit song). i always preferred the duran duran side (even if most of their follower made really bad versions od "a view to a kill"). i think that duran duran is a choise i`d love to hear again, but it should be a duet with Amy Winehouse. it sound so crazy that it must be something out of the ordinary. think of the combination of simon clean voice with her dirty one.

Defo 100% Duffy should do it! shes amazing. Amy Winehouse is good but no way deseves it lets face it shes an idiot an if shes picked people are basically saying its ok for her to do whats shes doing yet again.
