The new Whitney Houston song

Right, let's get down to the nitty-gritty. Is Whitney's comeback tune a blistering statement of intent that proves The Voice never left her? Will it show Leona Lewis who the Queen of Warbled Heartache really is? Will it make us forget about the "crack is whack" thing for, ooh, at least three-and-a-half minutes? Erm... no.
'Like I Never Left' is a bland, unexciting midtempo duet with Akon, who also wrote and produced the track. Houston sounds decent enough, but it's hard to tell how well her pipes have held up because the song's essentially asking a Lamborghini singer to put in a Toyota Yaris vocal performance. She's stuck in third gear throughout.

He's not wrong there - just look at the success of last year's Houston compilation, The Ultimate Collection. Sadly, Akon seems to have taken the "classic Whitney" brief rather too literally, smothering 'Like I Never Left' with dull, dated beats and keyboard sounds that were last heard on 'The Greatest Love Of All'.
Nobody's expecting Whitney to compete with Rihanna and Beyoncé in the booty-shaking stakes - let's be honest, she never had much street cred first time around - but is a vaguely contemporary production too much to ask for? She'll need to do better than this if she wants to compete with Mariah again.
What do you think of 'Like I Never Left'? Is it what you were hoping for from Whitney Houston's comeback? Use the space below to have your say.

I've heard the song a few times. The more I hear it, the better it sounds. I do wish she'd done this without Akon; she has nothing to feed off of given that this is a duet. Her voice is strong, but I suspect it would have been stronger if Akon were not on this cut; he almost washes her out at some sections, and he is bland and uninspiring. I'm happy her voice is sounding stronger; the songs will come!!!

Whitney will never top the charts again, she has had her day and is no longer "hip". She knows this as well and that is why she has Akon on the tune, so as she appeals. Having said all that the tune is still awesome and Akon makes the tune, as he always does when he features on tunes.

its not very good for whitney, she should of released a better song with more meaning and feeling in it after her recent battles and troubles for example the song r kelly wrote for her 'I look to you' its a really good song that can be found on youtube.

I miss Whitney, she is one of the living legends of my generation, she was (and i hope becomes again) one of the greatest recording artists on the planet! When and why did this all go wrong? Well let's just say Whitney didn't do her own thing, don't care what you say 2 had to play at that game! This song is not greatm but this is more thanks to Akons involvement, he is so bland that he has managed to make a stand out artist sound almost just as bland!

it seems more akon's than whitney's material. anyway, love to hear her back in business and yes i'm her big fan like many out there sure will like it. her voice could never be the same (bodyguard era), that's understood but at least expecting something better than this.

Hmmm, not too inspiring, is it? Shame that muppet Akon is on it. There's a bit of note holding towards the end, but there's no kind of attitude to it. It lacks a bit of spirit. It also lacks any kind of sing-a-long-ness. I wanna be singing it in the shower, not wishing it was better. Fabulous to think she might be back out there, though.

Boring and very lackluster song. I hope she has second thoughts about her "comeback song" because this one sucks. It has no spark or bang that she really needs to launch her back to the main stage. She may find the public just doesnt want her bland music like they didn't like Janet's. Both women are such amazing artists that I think need to move on and find success in other endeavors, movies, musicals, something other than trying to prove their staying power in pop music that has completely morphed since they dominated the charts.

The song i amazing, it sounds very current. Whitney's voice still sounds quite good, she is not showcasing it to it's full potential as this song does not require it. She doesn't have to sing a "Whitney Houston balad" to have a great song you know!

Yeah, maybe it is a bit too mellow...Although you still hear that her voice is still there, definatly comes more naturally to her than it does to Leona.

this is awful Even if Whitney has lost her voice, she at least deserves a better song
