There's a new boyband in town

Don't worry - it's not Billiam. We're actually talking about Avenue, the group who were chucked off The X Factor a couple of years ago because they already had a management deal. By all accounts it's been rockier than Brighton beach for the boys since then, but everything seems to have come good in the end: they're signed to a major label, they've collaborated with Anders SG from Alphabeat and Jason Pebworth from Orson on their debut album, and their first single comes out next month.

It remains to be seen whether the music-buying public really wants a new boyband, but 'Last Goodbye' is actually pretty good: a bit dancey, really quite catchy, in no way drippy. The Avenue boys have decent voices too, as we found out at their champagne-lubricated showcase in central London last night. And Avenue will take encouragement from the success of The Saturdays - a similarly "old-fashioned" pop group in many ways - whose debut single is poised to crack the top ten on Sunday.

Anyway, you can decide for yourselves whether Avenue are any good or not - the 'Last Goodbye' video appears for your viewing pleasure below:

The most interesting thing about Avenue initially was Jamie Tinkler, of Pop!, A Song For Europe and Pop Idol fame. (He once shared his chips with me at a Pop! PA.) But where has he gone? Having said that, this is pretty damn good, even on one viewing. All they need now is some airplay, which may not be easy.

The song gets better and better with more listens.

Like The Saturdays, Avenue are releasing a track that is very catchy yet the production sounds like something from the early noughties and not really in keeping with modern pop. I do like the song, and as with If This Is Love, they will still appeal, however in comparison to pop acts such as Girls Aloud, it all seems rather dated.

erm... will be touch and go whether they are a hit or not. Not quite the same standard as the BRILLIANT new The Saturdays!

It's all very catchy I have to admit, but visually it's slightly confusing... I can't help but think I'm looking at Westlife
