Ne-Yo tried something different last time around, flaunting the dance moves we never knew he had on the the discotastic 'Closer', and he was duly rewarded with his second UK No.1. His follow-up single, 'Miss Independent', isn't half as danceable, but as midtempo R&B tracks go it ticks all the right boxes: strong melody, loads of synths, nice modern beats.

It's all about how Ne-Yo appreciates a woman who's independent, a honey who's makin' money, a momma who "profits" dollars... you get the picture. At one point Ne-Yo compliments the object of his affection for being close to paying off her mortgage and her car loan. This might not seem terribly sexy, but as every Jane Austen character knows there's nothing wrong with taking a practical approach towards matters of the heart.

The video, which features appearances from Keri Hilson, Bad Boys II star Gabrielle Union and model/actress Lauren London, is supposed to look like an old office politics movie from the eighties. It does its job so well that you'll keep expecting Melanie Griffith to flounce into shot as you watch it.
