She's also a shameless crowd-pleaser, which is most definitely an asset when you're performing to people who've only ever seen you on music channels. During her 50-minute set, Perry gushes about how much she loves London, flirts incessantly with her guitarist, cracks some fairly decent jokes, tries (and fails) to talk in an English accent and dedicates the set's one ballad, the Alanis-esque 'Thinking Of You', to members of her fan club. Aw, bless.
And she's quick-witted too. When an inquisitive fan in the front row asks one too many questions between songs, Perry's riposte is as swift and sharp as a tiny electric shock: "Wow, we should really take an interview, huh?" You'd never get that from Leona.
Truth be told, only three of Perry's Pink-style pop/rock tunes really match their singer for spunk. 'Hot N Cold' already sounds like a smash; the lyrically-suspect 'Ur So Gay' becomes a mass singalong and 'I Kissed A Girl', the inevitable closer, has more stomp than a rugby team in platform boots. That we left with a sudden urge to pop into Costcutter for a stick of cherry chapstick really says it all.
