Girls Aloud are back!

Published Monday, Sep 15 2008, 11:15 BST | By Nick Levine | 17 comments
The new Girls Aloud single had its first play on Radio 1 last night and, to put it mildly, it's not what anyone was expecting. It's neither a 'Call The Shots'-style pop romp nor a floorfiller in the 'Something Kinda Ooooh' vein. Hell, it's not even a ballad.

So, what it is then? Well, if you asked Girls Aloud and Xenomania, their producers, to come up with a new song for the Dirty Dancing musical, it would probably sound like 'The Promise'. That's right, Girls Aloud have gone sixties.

"Oh balls," you're probably thinking, "Not them as well!" But 'The Promise' is actually really good - a cute, wistful pop song that feels like a semi-distant relative to to 'Can't Speak French'. There's a groovy "one, two, three, four!" intro, some nice Spectorish touches in the production and a lovely, classic-sounding melody.

In summary: it's hard to get your head round at first, but Girls Aloud are still very much on form. If you haven't heard it yet, radio rips are easy enough to find on YouTube.

What do you think of the new Girls Aloud single? How do you think it will do in the charts?Use the space below to have your say.

Those who dislike it must be heartless. This is such a warm song that's perfect for the winter with some of the best melodies in their discography. The chorus and the bits leading up to it are absolutely brilliant. One of the biggest Girls Aloud songs and should do really well.

Really, what the hell has any of us done that is so awful to deserve drivel like girls aloud. it's bad enough Cheryl Cole having the cheek to be on X Factor telling people if they can sing or not when she can't sing herself. Please stop this generic rubbish and actually do something original. What a waste of space these harridans are!!!

Normally like most Girls Aloud stuff but the new single just sounds like a rip of the theme from Blankety Blank. Come on girls try a bit harder!

I've never really liked girls aloud but I do have to admit that some of their songs are quite good, but this definatley isn't one of them. I haven't got through the whole song yet...even after about 13 attempts!

Massive fan of the Girls, not exactly something I expected but brilliant fun nevertheless. Still, I can't help but express disappointment that the girls released 2 average and 1 brilliant single of their most recent (and best) album. Where were 'Black Jacks' and 'Girl Overboard'??? They need to make better decisions on the next album. Don't try for longevity, just get the 4 best songs out as singles asap.

I have listened to it several times and everytime I hate it more and more. I cant see how people say its catchy. It just screams at me "TURN IT OFF!!!"

oh. I love this song! Girls Aloud are defintely back with angst. It didn't meet my expectations though. But nevertheless, it'll settle for a top 10 spot when it is released on October.
