Beyoncé's double whammy

'Single Ladies' is a booty-shaking club cut that's a relative - let's call it a trendy younger cousin - to her 2006 hit 'Check On It'. Truth be told, it's fairly standard Beyoncé fare, with La Knowles taunting a commitment-phobic ex who can't stand watching her play the field. "If you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it," she tells him coolly.
'If I Were A Boy', a proper, classic-sounding ballad, is more memorable. The warm, subtle production puts the focus squarely on Beyoncé's vocal, which is powerful and packed with emotion, and the melody's so strong you feel you've known it forever. But why is Beyoncé wondering what it's like to be a dirty great bloke? Well, the answer comes towards the end of the song and it's not because she's got a fetish for men's clothing.
