Notes on the new Britney album

Published Monday, Nov 10 2008, 20:00 GMT | By Nick Levine | 17 comments
Earlier today we were treated to a sneak preview of the new Britney album. Here's what we found:

  • Circus is essentially a sequel to last year's Blackout album - it has the same fierce electro sound, but Britney sounds more confident and there's less reliance on the vocoder.

  • Circus also has something Blackout didn't - a proper, teary-eyed ballad. It's called 'Out From Under' and it's really quite lovely.

  • The title track is a rampaging monster of a song whose chorus kicks off with a Max Martin-style thump. "I'm the ringleader, I call the shots, I'm a firecracker, I like it hot," Britney sings on the verses. It's been confirmed as the next single and the video's already been shot.

  • Britney's introduced as "our very own pop princess, now Queen of Pop" on 'Kill The Lights'. That's her off Madonna's Christmas card list then...

  • The song itself is almost as knowing as Blackout's 'Piece Of Me', with Britney taking the paparazzi to task. "You don't like me, I don't like you," she tells them. "Only difference is you still listen, I don't have to."

  • 'If U Seek Amy', on which Britney actually reunites with Max Martin, is 50% glam, 50% rave. The title has nothing to do with a certain Miss Winehouse and makes more sense if you say it quickly... just don't do so in polite company.

I just heard clips of those songs - I can't say I'm overly excited about the album. I just still think she is moving too fast for her own good and putting quickly thrown together songs out there that don't do her justice. She's never had an amazing voice, but she was always really sexy. In most of these songs she sounds like a robot. She doesn't even sound like herself in Kill the Lights! I just wish she would give herself some time to rest before making some big 'comeback.'

Remember Max Martin? The guy behind Baby one more time, Oops, Stronger etc? He's back on 'If You Seek Amy' in the vein of recent hits by P!nk, Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson. Sounding like radar - a kindof dancey/rocky/poppy mix - If You Seek Amy is a comical, uptempo dance/pop track that'll make you laugh n sing along

Wow! the preview of Circus – (2nd single) rocks!! Verse: “There’s only 2 types of ppl in the world, the ones that entertain & the ones that observe. Well baby I’m a put on a show kinda girl, don’t like the back seat – gotta be first. I’m like the ring leader, I call the shots, I’m like a fire cracker – I make it hot! (When i put on a show)... Bridge: “I feel the adrenaline movin through my veins, spotlight on me and i’m ready 2 break, i’m like a performer the dance-floor is my stage, better be ready hope that u feel the same” Chorus: “All eyes on me in the centre of a ring just like a circus, (incomprehensible) don’t stand there watching me, follow me, show me what u can do, everybody let go we can make a dance floor just like a circus” ...tuuuunnnneee possibly her best song so far, like a lovechild of Oops & slave wit some new funk thrown in! ;-)

Queen of Pop? Hardly. That title will ALWAYS be owned by Madonna. I love Britney but Madonna is a force of amazing talent, songwritting, performing and a visonary artist. Britney Spears is just a pop Princess that is lucky to work with the right people and make great catchy songs. Madonna will always reign as the Queen of Pop and Britney, Rihanna, Janet, Gwen, Kylie, Nelly, Fergie, Christina, Beyonce and Mariah are just her royal diva subjects

Critically acclaimed Blackout was well underrated due to circumstances at release, so bring on version 2 with Circus! Womanizer = killer intro, verses of Ooh Ooh Baby, No.1 smash in USA and wicked vid! Kill The Lights feat Danja = mash up of Piece Of Me theme and Get Naked (I Got A Plan) sound. Is it true Circus (2nd single) is produced by Lil Jon?
