B-side of the Week: Lily Allen's 'Fag Hag'

Published Friday, Jan 23 2009, 06:08 GMT | By David Balls | 9 comments
Two weeks ago we started sifting through the new releases in pursuit of the best B-sides around. First up we had a rather delicious Girls Aloud 'Megamix', and then we featured Pink's dark and gritty 'When We're Through'. This week, well, we may have struck gold with the flipside to Lily Allen's eagerly-anticipated comeback single 'The Fear'. It's called 'Fag Hag' and quite frankly it's amazing. "I could be your fag hag and you could be my gay," she trills on this ode to gay best friends all over the land. That's right, Allen still knows exactly how to snag our attention.

Lyrically, 'Fag Hag' combines the sweet and the twee - "I like apple pie and you like banoffee, we both love shopping for furniture and meeting for coffee" - with the altogether more risqué. "We're both in our element when we're on our knees," she sings at one point, tongue threatening to burst out of cheek. With a chorus that will stick in your head from the first listen, 'Fag Hag' is the sort of song you can only imagine Lily Allen pulling off and is a worthy holder of our B-side of the Week title.

The full version is available on the 'The Fear' CD single and download bundle, both out Monday, but for now here's a 30-second taster:
