Right, onto the new Pet Shop Boys single

Published Monday, Feb 9 2009, 16:25 GMT | By Nick Levine | 12 comments
Shocking as this may seem, today isn't just the day we became acquainted with The Saturdays' Comic Relief tune. It's also the day the new Pet Shop Boys single had its radio premiere. 'Love etc.' - a very PSB title, that - is the first product of the duo's collaboration with Xenomania, the writing/production team best known for working with Girls Aloud. (Well, second if you count 'The Loving Kind').

Anyway, Neil Tennant has described 'Love etc.' as a "post-lifestyle anthem", a phrase that doesn't really make sense until you hear the song. The message is essentially that the flashy trappings of luxury living - private jets, Beverly Hills mansions, a "chauffeur-driven limousine on call" - aren't what makes life fulfilling. "Call me naive, but I believe that love is free", Tennant sings on the outro. Yup, that's right, this tune's credit crunch appropriate.

Musically, 'Love etc.' is a midtempo electropop shuffle with a call-and-response chorus between - brace yourselves for a technical term - a chanty, manly-sounding choir and the ever angelic Tennant. It's not the group's most immediate single, but it becomes really quite catchy the third or fourth time you hear it. Press play below to judge for yourself:

First band I got into as a kid, still have tons of their records, 12 inches etc (showing my age!) Unfortunately they are nothing compared to the days of West End Girls, Opportunities, It's a Sin, Surburbia, Love comes quickly, Heart...up to about "Alright" and "Domino Dancing" - the big number ones they warranted. They even released remix albums with new tracks like "Paninaro" and "In the Night" - amazing, groundbreaking stuff. Heck, they always used to release at the same time as U2 and gave them a run for their money against The Joshua Tree in the album chart! Now they are just pointless and it's a real shame. They seemed to go off the boil from "Go West" onwards. Will always respect them, but they failed to reinvent themselves successfully in their latter part of their career. Check out the youtube history of the band and see which ones are in the millions, it's all the old stuff.

Very catchy. Hopefully will do well as it is very commercial. Who knows though? Am looking forward to their new album Yes. Hopefully it can maintain the high standard that has been showcased in it's lead single Love Etc...

It's really quite dull - maybe Neil Tennant will actually learn to sing one day.

Never really listened to any of the pet shop boy's stuff, but this is really really catchy. Hope it's a hit for them!
