B-side of the Week: It's the Pet Shop Boys!
Published Friday, Mar 13 2009, 06:00 GMT | By David Balls | 2 comments
If you thought last week's psychedelic offering from Oasis was a departure from our usual B-side of the week selections, well, we've taken things even further this time with a gloomy gem from Pet Shop Boys.
Considering that 'Love etc.', a buoyant slice of electropop, is said to reflect the generally uplifting tone of the new PSB album, it's no surprise that 'Gin And Jag' has been given B-side status. With its foreboding electronic arrangement and scathing lyrics, it won't leave you with a broad smile, but it's certainly worth a listen.
The title, in case you were wondering, refers to the affluent middle classes of suburban England - the golf club and wine bar brigade, essentially. The song's protagonist is a well-to-do middle-aged man who's seeking out a partner on the internet. "In '99, I was quite a catch, I wish you'd seen me then," he tells his potential suitor, only to warn him away from his gin decanter rather abruptly: "Do you know what it's worth?"
A sympathetic character appraisal this ain't, but it shows the PSBs have lost none of their flair for tack-sharp social commentary. The full version is available on the 'Love etc' CD single, out Monday, but for the time being here's a 30-second taster:
What do you think of 'Gin And Jag'? Would it make you buy the CD single? Use the space below to leave your comments.
