B-side of the Week: Franz Ferdinand

When Franz Ferdinand admitted they were "bored" with making guitar music, a fair few pop fans will have nodded in agreement. So it was a welcome surprise when they developed a penchant for all things synthy on their third album Tonight - manifested most notably in the eight-minute epic 'Lucid Dreams'.
For the B-side to new single 'No You Girls', Franz have plumped for an edited version of 'Lucid Dreams' that's already been used in EA's American football game Madden 09. But how do the two compare? Taking an album highlight and cutting it down to half its original length is always going to be contentious - just ask Girls Aloud fans - and Franz Ferdinand certainly haven't shied away from taking a risk.
Midway through the original 'Lucid Dreams', the boys pack up their guitars and launch into an heady, experimental orgy of synths and house beats that's both unexpected and thrilling. Disappointingly though, any trace of this new-found edge has been erased from the edited version, with the band returning to more familiar territory instead. This will no doubt satisfy Franz purists, but those wanting something with a bit more kick will probably stick with the album version. The full track is available on the 'No You Girls' 7", out Monday, but for the time being here's a 30-second taster:
