Whatever happened to... MN8?

Published Monday, Apr 13 2009, 06:24 BST | By David Balls | 11 comments
Formed in 1992 by Londoners KG, Kule T, G-Man and Dee Tails, MN8 went on to score seven top 40 singles in the mid-nineties, including the suggestively-titled 'I've Got A Little Something For You'. Despite enjoying success across Europe, the US and Asia, the boys didn't make it into the noughties as a group and we're keen to find out why! To answer our questions, we called up lead singer KG - now residing in the sunny suburbs of Sydney - to find out what happened to MN8.

Did you expect 'I've Got A Little Something For You' to be so successful?
"Even when we were given the demo by the producers, I thought it had hit potential written all over it. I thought it was a bit like Right Said Fred's 'I'm Too Sexy' in that it would either be a huge hit or a big flop. MN8 became so big so quick that it was hard to keep up. The best part of it was that we were making money from doing something that we all loved. I remember waking up in the morning and thinking that I could have been working in McDonalds but instead I was travelling the world."

What exactly was that little something you had to give?
"Haha! Well we certainly weren't making reference to our anatomy in any way. I guess we thought we could make a little difference at the time. The other boybands were very much targeted at the teen and gay market, but we wanted to appeal to a more R&B audience."

Why did MN8 seem to disappear completely?
"Around 1998 and 1999 we did our last European shows. We were at the end of our deal with Sony and weren't really sure what we wanted to do. We decided to take a break and think things through. I got married and dragged to Australia and since then I've been working on different music projects and producing. I had a big pile of songs that were originally for MN8 that I decided to put out myself."

What prospects are there for an MN8 reunion?
"Quite a lot's happened in the past few months actually. We're in tentative talks about maybe putting MN8 back together and doing a tour. The thing about MN8 is that we never did the sort of music we should have done. We had the right aesthetic but the potential to do so much more. If you look at the commercial side of R&B these days, we would have fitted in better. We were kind of ahead of our time in some ways."

Finally, will you be getting those trademark boxer shorts back out?
"Haha! They're carefully tucked away in a cupboard somewhere. No doubt one day my kids can have a good laugh at me when I'm six foot under. I don't think they'll come out for any reunion shows though. We're in our thirties now, so our pants don't sag so much now!"

i totally disagree with blestsense. kg recognises that mn8 was a pop group not the saviours of r&b and yes they were ahead of their time in that respect with their catchy choruses and edgy sound. also while i had a crush on him back then its stupid to expect to feel the same as a grown woman. i'm grateful to kg and mn8 for the music of our youth.

I get kg's pov and totally disagree with blestsense. in his comment he recognises that mn8 was only a 'pop' group with R&B appeal and was ahead of its time in that respect. they werent trying to be jodeci. plus although i fancied kg back then i would expect to feel the same now i'm a grown woman. we were all kids back then get a grip.

I was obsessed with MN8 for all of five minutes when I was about 14/15. A friend of mine stole my cassette single of their cover of 'Happy'. It was when my mum bought the album and I was completely underwhelmed that the appeal waned. Oh yes and like Tamora I was totally enamoured with KG. I recall they got in trouble for showing their chests off on TOTP. Looking back can't see the appeal so much...and if KG thinks it's a good thing to resemble the terrible state of R&B now and that they were 'ahead of their time' then I really have to distance myself from that POV. Good fun though, looking back. Shalom x

i heard they split because g-man the one with no shirt was screwing deetails ex girlfriend Kelly from that girlband Eternal - this caused a rift. the band was already being ripped off by their record company, and with the in-fighting couldnt see any reason to stay together.

OMG I was such a HUGE MN8 fan when I was younger and had the BIGGEST CRUSH EVER on KG. If they got back together I would definitely go to a reunion show! I never got to see them first time around so would make the effort this time. I still have my albums and all the singles. Get back together guys! Please???!!!
