Britney Spears: Live in London
Published Thursday, Jun 4 2009, 12:10 BST | By Nick Levine | 40 comments
As you've no doubt heard, Britney Spears kicked off the European leg of her 'Circus' tour at London's O2 Arena last night. After haggling like an Apprentice candidate on a buying-and-selling task, we managed to nab ourselves a ticket and took our notepad along for company. Here, making full use of some classic Britney lyrics, are our notes on her performance.
She's running this like-like-like a circus.
Whatever the show throws at us - be it magic tricks, giant flying picture frames or simulated onstage welding (yes, really!) - Britney's always portrayed as the ringleader. She tells her dancers to drop and give her ten during 'Boys', bashes them on the bonce with a pink mallet at the end of 'If U Seek Amy', and spends a lot of time marching them from one side of the stage to the other.
That's my prerogative.
Does Britney sing live? Well, it's impossible to say for certain without blackmailing one of The O2's sound technicians, but let's just say we doubt that she's reaching for the Strepsils this morning.
Baby, don't you wanna dance upon me?
Britney executes her moves confidently and competently tonight, but the trickiest routines are left to her troupe of backing dancers.
She's so lucky, she's a star.
The crowd's palpable affection for Britney is really quite touching. She even gets a cheer for hopping on the back of a tricycle and allowing herself to be pedalled across the stage - respect.
Let me break the ice.
Britney doesn't address the audience until the ninth song of the evening, but when she does, informing us she's going to "slow things down" for 'Everytime', the roar from the crowd is ferocious. Thereafter her interaction with her fans comprises one "What's up London?", one "Thank you London" and... well... that's it.
They want a piece of her.
Britney performs 'Piece Of Me' inside a gilded cage-on-wheels. Spot the metaphor!
Hit me baby one more time.
Yes, she actually performs it! Other vintage Britters hits slotted between tracks from Blackout and Circus are 'Toxic', 'Do Somethin', 'Everytime', 'Boys', a raved-up 'I'm A Slave 4 U' and a Bollywood remix of 'Me Against The Music'. Sadly, there's no space for 'Stronger' though.
All of the boys and all of the girls want to...
Though she's as innocent as a curtain-twitcher these days, it still feels naughty to watch Britney being mounted by a dancer in bondage togs during 'Touch Of My Hand'.
I see you looking at me like I'm some kind of freak.
Don't believe the gossip rags! If we had to sum up Britney's appearance in three words, we'd choose "fit", "curvy" and "rumpalicious".
Gimme more!
Sadly, in spite of some white-hot choreography and spectacular stage sets, tonight isn't a top notch pop concert. It's hard to believe that Britney's fully engaged when she clearly isn't singing live and her interaction with the crowd is so infrequent. More often that not, the motions are being well and truly gone through. For that reason, and even though there are flashes of Britney gold here and there, it's a
kind of night.

Some of the laughable and pathetic excuses from Britney fans astounds me. You "prefer" she didn't sing live? Translation - **She can't sing live.** Britney songs sound the same? Nope they don't. We'd all be disappointed? Nope. Only the people whom accept mediocrity. Beyonce and other people mentioned here are also recording artists. These excuses are weak. Are you saying that the songs written for Britney can't be sung live? Nope. Britney just chooses to mime. Then enter the typical Chris Crocker statement "Leave the girl alone". It really is sad. I paid for Britney to entertain as well. Unfortunately, you could have stuck any person on stage instead of Britney to mime. Anyone can mime. Anyone. I don't think she is shit. She has released some classics. I am a fan. Stopping dictating that fans like her miming. They do not. I do not. And I'm not happy. Fans deserve a live show. Enjoy what she does or leave her alone? Please. You have to take the good with the bad. Live in the real world. Wait for the DVD.

Clearly this world is divided by britney fans and none brit fans. i went to see circus on 4th jue and yes it was amazing! so what the girl didnt sing live and to be honest i prefered she didnt. her songs are way too done over in a studio for her to try and sound the same so why bother, we'd all be dissapionted. beyonce ect all have different types of songs that are written for performing but britney always was a recording artist. Leave the girl alone! either enjoy what ever she does or leave her alone, god no's why so many people go out their way to slag the girl off for being shit. but what ever she does keeps her fans happy and that all that matters. we no were not going to watch her sing, thats what not what i paid for. i paid to be entertained by britney and thats just what she did!!!!!! GO BRITNEY!!!

Lydia. Beyonce does what Britney does not. Dance and sing live. Not dance and mime live. Can't you handle that? I knew these Chris Crocker comments would dominate DS sooner or late. I firmly believe that these comments reflect the poster more than Britney. I firmly believe that posters like Lydia looked up to Britney. And now some people cannot handle whom Britney has turned into. A miming joke. Well get over it. The concert **was** poor. She **did not** interact with the audience. Your comments on Beyonce are somewhat ironic. Because all Britney did at the concer was "walk up and down, shake her ass, not dancing" - but also mimed her songs. Beyonces songs **do not** sound the same. Neither does Britneys songs. They are all unique. At least Beyonce has the respect for people and their value for money to sing live. Being in the same room as Britney? Please. Give me strength. She should become a dancer herself.

I went last night and i thought it was amazing. I dnt care if she mimes because she has never sung live as she isnt exactly mariah i expect a good show and amazing dancing which she lacks now days but it was stll wiked. Please stop comparing her to beyonce. I wouldnt want to go and see someone walk up and down a stage shaking her ass not dancing and screaming her songs which all sound the same. Britneys a legend and to be in the same room as her and see her perform to music was amazing

I went to see britney and can say i was disappointed. I even fell asleep during it, and have heard other people say the same. I didnt live ciara until britney concert when i thought she was amazing, britney should have had more interaction and the o2 needed screens so that people at the back could see anything. Was very disappointed.

I went on opening night too. What an utter waste of time. If she sang live? Isn't that what she is? A singer? Like someone said before. Why on earth did she wear a mic? She doesn't use it to sing. She should be called Britney the Dancer. Some seriously deluded people out there. Believe the reviews from critics and fans. It is not worth the hype. Please don't waste your money. Especially in a recession. Wait for the DVD. Honestly hand on heart. Wait for the DVD. Without the need to sing live, you would have thought she had extra energy to dance. She dance half-heartedly and by numbers. She then just shakes her body and mimes. Like other reviews said before it's like she didn't want to be there. And the interaction bordered on non-existent. Her tour dancers made her efforts look foolish. Hardly flawless. Britney is back? Nope. Please rest Britney. Sing live and prove your critics wrong. Madonna, Beyonce, Pink, Tina Turner and the PCD all sang live with better dance routines. What's Britney's excuse? People would then moan about her weight or hair? The others face the same criticism. What's Britneys's excuse again? Take off your rose tinted glasses for your own sanity. Fans accepting her miming are basically saying she's a bad singer. I don't get that. Please rest up Britney. Practice your vocals and give your fans the chance to see you live. I think we deserve that. Especially after all the support we have shown you. I don't mind waiting.

I saw Britney on the opening night and after seeing her i got more tickets and im going again next Saturday. The show was spectacular. Never seen anything like it before. If she sang live people would then moan about her dancing or her weight or hair or something else. Im glad she didnt sing live as the show was flawless and she wouldnt of been able to do half the stuff she did if she sang live. Britney = AMAZING!

Saw Britney Spears. After flights, hotels and time off work, was she worth it?? No. The performance was mimed. Just terrible. I wish people here would stop saying that her "real fans" don't care if she mimed. I'm a "real fan" and I do care. When I go to any concert I expect someone who is paid to be a singer to sing live. I wish people who don't care that Britney mimes, would stopping accepting their low expectations and expect everyone else to be okay with it too. Poor concert for such a high price. Britney needs to rest.

I saw Britney on the opening night and thought she was amazing. The whole performance was fantastic. If she sang live or mimed it did not matter to me and I was not bothered that she did not interact with the crowd that much. I feel that people are just going to find faults with ther performance no matter what she had done. Overall I loved every minuted of it and felt the show was fantastic. Britney is def back!!

Hahahahaha BEYONCE!! BEYONCE!! BEYONCE!! Seriously though you DS people should review her show. You can't compare her to Britney, and the reason she's mentioned so much here is to do with Britney miming. I could buy her cd for a tenner, why pay so much more just to be in the same gaint space as her? Pink is another example of a proper performer. Saw her live in April and she puts on one hell of a show, visually and performance wise. I'm sorry to say it but Britney is living off what she used to be, and sooner or later people are going to wise up. Don't get me wrong I hope she sorts herself out but as she is now, I wouldn't waste my money on her.

Poons. Fair play. I know Britney has 2 kids. However, Madonna kids too, is a 50 year old woman, whom on top of all that was going through a divorce with Guy Ritchie. What's Britney's excuse? Not dissing her. I think she should recoup and do a live tour when she's rested and ready.

Luke. If You Seek Amy. Wow. What amazing lyrics Britney has. LMAO. I'm kidding. But your point is moot. The majority of views her are concerned that she does not sing live. Your right. It's just not on. Believe me. Paying the amount to be in the same venue as Britney wasn't enough. The X-Factor audience got the better deal. Least they didn't have to pay.

can people stop comparing Britney to Beyonce, beyonce makes toot whilst britney makes music which she always makes her own...beyonce just changes her musical style so frequently, you have no idea who she is as a music talent, and do not get me started on the lyrics of 'If i was a boy'..i could have put a monkey down with a quill and it would have done better...but, back to britney..at the end of the day, who cares if she doesn't sing live or dance that well, to be in the same venue as a legend should be enough :) (do you reckon im a fan)

I've been a fan a long time. MASSIVE FAN of Pop Music. Unfortunately some fans on here love the IMAGE of Britney Spears - more than her vocal talents. They like the glitz and glamour of her lifestyle. Like any concert I go to - I expect singers to sing LIVE. Is Britney Spears a singer?? Yes! Then she should sing LIVE! Is Britney Spears a dancer? Yes! Then she should dance her butt off! Is Britney Spears a performer!! HELL YES!!! Then she should SING and DANCE LIVE!! Ciara did exactly what Britney didn't. People whom tolerate MIMING just have low expectations. It's disgusting what the "Smash Hits" and "TOTP" mentality have done to peoples expectations. Never been to a Britney concert before. I honestly did expect her to sing LIVE. She didn't. VERY DISAPPOINTING. Britney said that she wanted to prove her critics wrong. I don't get how she's going to do that by miming! Don't get me wrong. The set and her dancers were amazing. However - the Backup Dancers outshone Britney. Her dancing seemed unenergetic and mostly dissolved into hip movements. If she doesn't sing LIVE - why on earth does she wear a headset MIC for? Come on. What's the point in pretending. Just dance for goodness sake without a mic. Beyonce sings and dancers LIVE. Recommended. Madonna is 50 years old and dancers 3 times as hard and sings LIVE. She's almost twice Britney's age. So does Tina Turner for goodness sake. There is NO EXCUSE for MIMING!! Set and choreography get top marks!! Britney the singer??? ... I'll leave that to your imagination.

Ive seen Britney before on her Onyx Hotel Tour and I said "NEVER AGAIN". I wouldnt waste any more money on her, it was just a complete and utter joke. At the end of the day, its a concert a music concert...You should atleast attempt to sing live. Yes, In the olden days she was an amazing performer/dancer - but she has nothing left now. The spark has went out, and bon voyage. I tell you, If you want to see a TRUE Performer, and an AMAZING concert go see Beyonce. She was absolutely INCREDIBLE. Worth every penny.

Britney has lost it... ten years ago she was new, exciting and different. And now she's just the shell of that. Artists here, there and everywhere are purely upstaging her - Pink, Beyonce, Ciara (LOL). The industry has evolved and she hasn't, and an audience wants more than some pretty girl moving her hips and her mouth. She can't give people what they want any more. Her albums are not selling amazingly, you can see a definite downward trend, she's being outsold by Pink etc. and considering Britney was THE B*TCH for so long, you can just see that she's lost it. She really needs to take a step back, stop making a fool of herself and spend time with the two kids she loves so much. People saying it's OK for her to mime because she's had kids or because she's had a breakdown - that's ridiculous. FYI Blackout was supposed to be her "comeback" album. And look at how terrible that done. Even with the unrivalled publicity Britney has, she can't even shift albums... her lack of live singing should be no surprise. If you ask me, it's time to get a copy of her Greatest Hits and remember her by that.
