Michael Jackson takes over the midweeks

Published Tuesday, Jun 30 2009, 11:57 BST | By Nick Levine | 22 comments
As you no doubt realised, it's all about Michael Jackson in today's midweeks, with fifteen of his classic hits currently inside the top 40. Here's how they're all doing.

  • 'Man In The Mirror' is on course to knock La Roux's 'Bulletproof' off the No.1 spot.

  • 'Billie Jean' and 'Thriller' are just inside the top ten, with 'Smooth Criminal' a kitten's whisker outside.

  • Meanwhile, 'Beat It' and 'Black Or White' are taking pride of place in the top 20.

  • As for the rest of the Jacko classics in the top 40, they arrive in this order: 'Dirty Diana', 'You Are Not Alone', 'Earth Song', 'Don't Stop Til You Get Enough', 'Bad', 'They Don't Care About Us', 'I Want You Back', 'Ben'.

  • However, shocking as this may seem, other music is being bought this week. Cascada's 'Evacuate The Dancefloor' is on course to debut inside the top three, Jamie T's 'Sticks 'N' Stones' has cracked the top 20, and The Saturdays' 'Work' is languishing between the 25 and 30 mark.

  • Over on the albums chart, La Roux are in the top spot ahead of three MJ hits comps: Number Ones, The Essential and King of Pop.

  • By the way, have you voted in our Michael Jackson poll yet? This feels like the most appropriate time to mention it.

WHY ISN';T CHILDHOOD IN THE LIST OF FAVOURITE MICHAEL JACKSON SONGS??? :(

LOL at this comment "MJ's music being mindless zombies" What does that make those buyng the Crapcada single? The only reason Crapcada are doing so well is because Chavs with more money than sense are downloading it over and over again! Think they'd have better things to do with their Giros?

You can't say it's unfair that MJ is dominating the chart - no one is making him dominate them - people are going out and buying his music, because they genuinely want to. That's what the charts are - a reflection on what people are buying, and low and behold, he had a lot of fans who are now devastated and want to buy his music.

Can't believe 'cause he died he this is what we get. Knew it would impact the chart but to this extent? Paparazzi better knock him off when the physical is released.

well i dont agree.. when theres sophie EB with a cracker of a song and really deserves a no1 that old freak (shame he died) goes and gets it and doesnt deserve it!

I agree with people who say it is a little unfair that MJ's dominance (although it is an amazing tribute from fans) is overshasdowing recent music which needs top ten hits. A bit ill-timed. But good that Man in the Mirror is expected to go No. 1 as originally it only went to No. 21! And buying MJ's music now isnt being mindless zombies, it is celebrating his work and also provides a reminder to why he is the King of Pop. If downloads didnt count towards the charts, people would still be downloading his music. Hoping Paparazzi and Battlefield were going up but that seems unlikely now...

For those of you who can't understand why people are buying Jackson by the bucketload: I wouldn't class myself as a 'fan' - I liked his stuff in the 80s and 90s, grew up with it and on this basis, MJ has always been there in the background of my life. When he died, for some reason I felt the need to listen to his music. I repeat - I'm not a fan of his, but generally a music-lover. I had most of the hits on my laptop so just popped them on my MP3 player - I guess the people buying his stuff either didn't have it before and wanted part of his legacy, or are those that want to propel him to the top (to where he was in his heyday). Like I say, I wouldn't class myself as an MJ fan but nevertheless I felt that need and urge to hear his music.

Hooray Jacko! He's truly the King Of Pop! Anyway, What about 'I Gotta Feeling' by Black Eyed Peas, 'I Know You Want Me' by Pitbull and have Noisettes moved since Sunday?
Ben, London, on June 30th, 2009
yes i no i am the biggest GA fan in the world, but even im surprised at the saturdays im glad its doing bad, but ma shocked cause [embarassingly admitting this] its a good song better than issues if this is love, but guess they dnt have tht many fans and since it is wt their 5th!!! single from the same album there little fan club have already got it, wt they thinkign releasing 5 songs from a album lol crazyy

i cant believe Bulletproof has been knocked off the top because of MJ's death. yeah, he was a legend and everything, but hes had his time at the top, and you've got to feel sorry for all the other artists who, most likely, won't peak as well as they would have done due to MJ's death. i bet they feel a bit cheated tbh..

I think it is great that he is heading for the top spot. Of course it is a fitting tribute. And in response to the person questioning why so many people are buying his music now, well surely it's understandable that youth makes up a large proportion of the purchasers and so many under-twenties may not have been caught up in the hype of the tunes when originally released? Or that the songs were so often played in clubs that they didn't feel the need to own them? Or even that songs like Man In The Mirror didn't even get past #21 first time round, so despite it's popularity amongst MJ fans, it may not be the most recognisable tune to those who were not so obssessed? Either way I think that, following the death of the most (in)famous solo male pop performer, it is totally in keeping that his back catalogue gets the surge of sales that it didn't make when he released his singles a few years ago. As for the rest of the chart - Cascada getting to #3?! Wow! Considering the genre usually gets tired and that europop artists rarely maintain the momentum of their first tracks (September, DJ Sammy etc), she is doing pretty darn well. I am surprised about Jordin Sparks not doing any better than she has. It really is an amazing song. As for Work - i think it should have been released much earlier in the album campaign.

Let’s be honest, Michael Jackson was no saint but musically he was incredible. The sheer scale of his brilliant back catalogue is being recognised with these chart positions and when we focus on his music rather than his personal life, we see he really was unbeatable. I cannot see any other artist making music today or in the future beating ‘Thriller’ for album sales or creativity. Just who is buying Cascade? Evacuate the dance floor is a cheap Gaga rip off at best, designed to be played in nightclubs with names like ‘Bolts’ or ‘Reflex’. The lead singer really believes she is the ‘new Madonna’ or something. Enjoy it while it last sweetheart as it ain’t going to last much longer. The Saturdays ‘Up’ was an effervescent pop song with a simple but completely effective video. I wish I could say the same thing about ‘Work’. It is cheap, personality free and highlights everything that is bland about the Saturdays. Watch the Dolly Rockers smash The Saturdays to pieces when they release their single.

I have to agree with Stuart, I also agree that MJ is a legend probably the biggest in music history. But why is everyone just buying his stuff now he's dead? It's not really the sign or true fans its just people buying in to something like mindless zombies which is generally the case with the majority of the human race. But each to their own I guess, even if everyone else is wrong.

Very happy about man in the mirror being top, hope it can maintain that position. I am happy for La Roux as well, it is a great album. You have got to feel sorry for the Saturday's though.
James, Watford, on June 30th, 2009
completely agree with Oli, hope Man In The Mirror stays at the top, it would be fitting for Jacko to have a no.1 single and album at this time. but he has already got no.1 in the album chart, so to be honest i would really like La Roux to reach the top spot there, their album is absolutely brilliant and they would completely deserve it.
Andrew, Scotland, on June 30th, 2009
good that alot of his songs are in the chart but i dont really like man in the mirror would prefer smooth criminal or dirty diana what about stranger in moscow
Shaun, Herts, on June 30th, 2009
Gutted that 'Work' is flopping! Isnt it on full release this week?! Same for Jordin Sparks' 'Battlefield', that's on full release this week so it's sad that it probably wont crack the Top 10!
