Whatever happened to... Ace Of Base?

Published Monday, Aug 10 2009, 06:38 BST | By David Balls | 25 comments
Hailing from Sweden and trailing a distinctive brand of reggae-tinged Europop, Ace Of Base burst onto the music scene in 1993 with their debut album Happy Nation. Since then they've sold a staggering 30 million records worldwide, notched up 12 UK top 40 singles and are still touring to this day. However, they've been curiously absent from British shores in recent years, so we called group member Ulf Ekberg for a much-needed catch up.

Did you ever imagine that your debut single, 'All That She Wants', would become such a massive success?
"We really believed in that song and our others, but in the beginning our world was Scandinavia. In our minds having a top ten in just a couple of countries would have been a "big hit", so when it became a worldwide number one the feeling was unbelievable and amazing."

Did you enjoy being thrust into the limelight?
"I loved being able to write music and produce songs and then get that adrenaline rush when we performed in front of thousands of people. But it was not like that for all of us. Malin (Berggren, singer) never really liked the fame side at all and hated being in the spotlight, which is eventually why she decided to leave."

What's your favourite Ace Of Base song?
"Of course 'The Sign' and 'All That She Wants' have a lot of meaning because they started off our success, but the song that's most popular when we perform live is 'Beautiful Life'. There is a real energy to it and the crowd go bananas every single time. It really is such a powerful feeling seeing that reaction."

What are Ace Of Base doing now?
"We've been on tour for the past year-and-a-half, mainly focusing on Northern Europe, Asia and Central America. We've also just completed a new album. Performing in Britain and the US is definitely on the agenda too, but we feel we need to have our record out before we come to those countries and do a good show."

When do you think it will be released?
"We're just deciding now whether to add a fourth member to the group again or to bring it out under a new name. At the moment we think it would be stronger with two female singers, so it's a little technical problem to solve!"

How would you describe the overall sound of it?
"We've found the magic we had when we made our first album nearly 20 years ago. Everything really clicked and it was unbelievable fun to record it. The sound is pure pop with some midtempo and some fast stuff. We've matured as songwriters but the innocent Swedish touch is still there. I think this is the best album we've ever written."

I was obsessed with 'All that she wants' when I was 12 but in hindsight now, 'The Sign' was their best song...or at least of what I know. Aren't they siblings, so won't it be weird to replace the blond sister? I think there were some rumours of Ace...having far right political leanings which contributed to the decline in popularity @least in the UK, so I'm told. Shalom x

Im just sad that they were alomst back with the promises of a major studio album. Its been a long wait and we have been supporting them. but it seems we are left in the dark and coming to the conclusion that the Ace Of Base story has ended without us ever being told :(. No offical website, No news on myspace even if its bad news nothing! Lucky Love and Don't go away are my fav AOB songs! Looking forward to Jennys new album!

I've been a fan from the beginning on and I am still sad about that Malin left the band, she was the Greatest. I'm not so happy to hear about a new member, Jenny will make it also with or without Malin! And why a new name? It's making no sense i think! Jonas, Ulf and Jenny are Ace of Base and nothing else! But it's great to hear that a new album will come out:)

Please don't bring a fourth member if it is not Malin. Use back up singers to help Jenny but that is it ULF, come on now. I am being a selfish fan. Love you guys, Acer forever.

AOB introduced me into the beautiful thing called music, I never listened to any music until I heard AOB. Tokyo Girl is my favorite song. My other favorites are Never Gonna Say I'm Sorry, Ravine, Angel Eyes, The Sign, Summer Days and Strange Ways. The Bridge is the Best album EVER! If you don't know ACE OF BASE listen to this album.

Ace of Base is one of the best bands ever. Their music is unique, and their sound cannot be copied. No for a 4th member, unless it would be again Linn. And a BIG YES for the new album under the name Ace of Base. It has been always a family band, no outsider, please. Go Jenny Go!

Having worked at Mega Rec's for AOB, "Beautiful Life" was the most technically complex videoclip, we ever attempted - and VERY expensive, too!!! Thanks for putting it online in the context of Ulf's interview. Watching it again brought tears to my eyes (kid you not!)...

They were great. I loved Everytime It Rains, Beautiful Life and Life Is A Flower. But my favourite was Ordinary Day on their Da Capo album (not released in UK). Looking forward to the new album

Have been a big fan of the band since their first album. I first heard it when I was about 9 yrs old! It's sad that Malin had to leave the band but their music has always been fabulous and hearing it evokes memories of my younger days! Favourites include Wheel of Fortune, The Sign, Beautiful Life, Life is a Flower, Angel Eyes, Cruel Summer... to name just a few! Would be interesting to see what the future holds for Ace of Base and to hear their new material!
