Goldfrapp, it's good to have you back

We've been Jodie Marsh desperate to hear the new Goldfrapp single since it was announced at the start of December and, when it popped up online yesterday morning, we weren't disappointed. It's called 'Rocket' and it's probably the purest, most straightforward pop song Alison and Will have ever given us.

It begins with the sound of a rocket taking off before launching into propulsive, synthy verses straight off of US radio circa 1982. It then glides towards a one-listen chorus that's been sprinkled with a pinch or two of disco glitter. If we said it sounds a bit like Kylie covering an old Van Halen single, that wouldn't be entirely misleading - Alison even ends the song with a 'Light Years'-style '5-4-3-2-1' countdown. In terms of lyrics, it's very much a break-up song in the positive and empowered sense. "Oh-oh-oh I've got a rocket, you're going on it," Alison sings on the chorus. "Oh-oh-oh, you're never coming back." Well, that's told him.

Final thoughts? Well, 'Rocket' isn't quite like anything Goldfrapp have released before - as we said at the start, it's probably the poppiest thing to which they've put her name - but it doesn't feel like a curveball either. Actually, it's kind of like the fierce synth-pop of old has been tempered with the warmth they discovered on Seventh Tree.
