Brit Awards 2010: Our predictions

Published Tuesday, Feb 16 2010, 16:15 GMT | By Nick Levine | 18 comments
Believe it or not, but there's more to tonight's Brit Awards than guessing what in the name of 'Bad Romance' GaGa's going to get up to onstage. The odd award will be handed out too, so, to that end, here are our predictions as to who's going to take home what.

British Male Solo Artist

Nominated: Calvin Harris, Dizzee Rascal, Mika, Paolo Nutini, Robbie Williams

Our prediction: Dizzee's the hip pick, and Paolo's album's shifted over a million copies, but we're sentimental sorts here at DS so we're going to plump for Robbie. Incredibly, that would take his Brits tally to sixteen, only 15 more than Des'ree.

British Female Solo Artist

Nominated: Bat For Lashes, Florence and the Machine, Leona Lewis, Lily Allen, Pixie Lott

Our prediction: Lily Allen and Bat For Lashes both released cracking albums this year, but it's hard to look beyond Florence for this gong, especially as victory would validate her Critics' Choice nod from last year.

British Group

Nominated: Doves, Friendly Fires, JLS, Kasabian, Muse

Our prediction: It's got to be Kasabian for this one - their West Ryder platter got great reviews, they've never won a Brit before and, well, the competition is about as fierce as an ickle fwuffy bunny wabbit.

British Album

Nominated: Dizzee Rascal for Tongue 'N Cheek; Florence and the Machine for Lungs; Kasabian for West Ryder Lunatic Asylum; Lily Allen for It's Not Me, It's You; Paolo Nutini for Sunny Side Up.

Our prediction: We'd give the gong to Lily for the alternately sweet and sharp It's Not You, It's Me, but this category looks like a two-way tussle between Florence and Kasabian. Hmm... Flo's label might want to add an extra zero to their expenses budget before they head to Earls Court tonight - Dom don't come cheap, you know.

British Breakthrough Act

Nominated: Florence and the Machine, Friendly Fires, JLS, La Roux, Pixie Lott

Our prediction: This trophy's chosen by Radio 1 listeners, so it would be a delightful irony if La Roux - an act who broke through in style despite initially being snubbed by the station - managed an upset. Sadly, we reckon it's far more likely that Florence will make it a hat-trick.

British Single

Nominated: Alesha Dixon for 'Breathe Slow'; Alexandra Burke for 'Bad Boys'; Cheryl Cole for 'Fight For This Love'; Joe McElderry for 'The Climb'; JLS for 'Beat Again'; La Roux for 'In For The Kill'; Lily Allen for 'The Fear'; Pixie Lott for 'Mama Do'; Taio Cruz for 'Break Your Heart'; Tinchy Stryder and N-Dubz for 'Number 1'.

Our prediction: Says the Brits website: "The British Single category is supported by Commercial Radio stations throughout the United Kingdom and The Sun newspaper." Says us: "It's a straight up popularity contest between Chezza and JLS." The former may well benefit from the sympathy vote, but the latter has a fanbase with a greater tendency to fritter away their pocket money on OCD phone-calling.

International Male Solo Artist

Nominated: Bruce Springsteen, Eminem, Jay-Z, Michael Buble, Seasick Steve

Our prediction: Eminem might be worth a punt, and you should never discount The Boss, but this is the year that Jay-Z finally married his superstar status to some bona fide UK chart success. (If Bublé wins, we'll gladly torch our Dad's collection of old Sinatra 45s.)

International Female Solo Artist

Nominated: Lady GaGa, Ladyhawke, Norah Jones, Rihanna, Shakira

Our prediction: Who else wore a gimp mask to a press conference? Who else sang on The X Factor inside a giant bath? Who else released three singles as utterly brilliant as 'Poker Face', 'Paparazzi' and 'Bad Romance'? If anyone other than Lady GaGa wins this award, the DS music team goes on strike tomorrow. Actually.

International Breakthrough Act

Nominated: Animal Collective, Daniel Merriweather, Empire Of The Sun, Lady GaGa, Taylor Swift

Our prediction: Animal Collective and Empire Of The Sun are trendy enough to appeal to the cred-obsessed Brits panel, but let's be honest, Lady GaGa in 2009 pretty much epitomises what an international breakthrough is all about. Or, to be more precise, a smash-through.

International Album

Nominated: Animal Collective for Merriweather Post Pavilion, Black Eyed Peas for The E.N.D., Empire Of The Sun for Walking On A Dream, Jay-Z for The Blueprint 3, Lady GaGa for The Fame

Our tip: Tricky one, this. The Peas LP is patchy, and the Animal and Empire albums are a bit too obscure, which leaves a two-showhorse battle between GaGa and Jigga. We're opting for the former because, well, it just feels like her year.

Brits Performance of 30th Year

Nominated: Bee Gees for 'Stayin' Alive' / 'How Deep Is Your Love' (1997); Bros for 'I Owe You Nothing' (1989); Coldplay for 'Clocks' (2003); Eurythmics and Stevie Wonder for 'Angel' (1999); Girls Aloud for 'The Promise' (2009); Kanye West for 'Gold Digger' (2006); Kylie Minogue for 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' (2002); Michael Jackson for 'Earth Song' (1996); Paul McCartney for 'Live And Let Die' (2008); Pet Shop Boys for 'Go West' (1994); Robbie Williams and Tom Jones for the Full Monty medley (1998); Scissor Sisters for 'Take Your Mama' (2005); Spice Girls for 'Wannabe' / 'Who Do You Think You Are' (1997); The Who for 'Who Are You' (1988)

Our tip: Oh, the memories! Macca's the most boring straightforward choice, MJ's got the sentimental vote, Kylie-spinning-on-a-silver-disc was pretty special and the Pets deserve credit for getting 90 hard-hat-clad Welsh miners onto the Brits stage, but we still can't see beyond Geri and that Union Jack dress. Spice Girls it is - and if Flo agrees, well, so much the better.

Brits Album of 30th Year

Nominated: Coldplay for A Rush Of Blood To The Head; Dido for No Angel; Dire Straits for Brothers In Arms; Duffy for Rockferry; Keane for Hopes & Fears; Oasis for What's The Story Morning Glory; Phil Collins for No Jacket Required; Sade for Diamond Life; The Verve for Urban Hymns; Travis for The Man Who

Our pick: Well, it's not going to be Phil Bloody Collins, is it? Coldplay shouldn't be counted out and The Verve are in with a shot, but this one seems destined to become Brit number six for Oasis (R.I.P.).
