Digital Spy's Gleemix: 'Laryngitis'

Another week, another cracking Glee, another clutch of cast-crooned cover versions to consume. The latest batch of single track downloads (erm... STDs?) is as eclectic as ever, running the gamut from a '30s big band number to a Sondheim showtune to a '90s R&B classic.

Now, much as we enjoyed Puck'n'Merc's take on 'Lady Is A Tramp' and Kurt's reworked version of 'Rose's Turn' from Gypsy - "Everything's coming up Kurt! Everything's coming up Hummel!" - they narrowly miss out on a place in this week's Gleemix thanks to competition that's stiffer than the bristles on a brand new broom.

Our first pick? Santana and Mercedes' diva duel on 'The Boy Is Mine'. Like all the best Glee remakes, it reminds you why you loved the original in the first place while also working as a delicious slice of sticky pop goodness in its own right. This cover comes off particularly nicely for two reasons - one, Mercedes resists the urge to over-sing; and two, Santana has much stronger chops than anyone could realistically have expected. Whatever next eh - Britney turning out to be the new Whitney?

Anyway, our second selection is Finn's game and gutsy go at 'Jessie's Girl'. OK, so the song's almost too obvious in the light of the Rachel-Jesse-Finn love triangle storyline, and Rick Springfield's lyrics were a bit on the literal side to begin with, but this '80s pop-rock classic has a chorus Cathy Dennis would pawn one of her Ivors for and consequently we just can't leave it out. So there.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, we haven't forgotten about the ensemble rendition of 'One', but... erm... well... it's just a trifle earnest, don't you think?
