Playlist: 10 tracks you need to hear

Published Monday, Sep 5 2011, 12:19 BST | By Robert Copsey and Lewis Corner | 25 comments
Listen to our ten favourite tracks this week, including Kelly Clarkson, Joe Goddard, Matt Cardle and Birdy.

Kelly Clarkson: 'Mr Know It All'
It will come as a shock to many, but Kelly Clarkson has finally given up on rehashing her worldwide breakthrough hit 'Since You've Been Gone' for her fifth album's lead single. Instead, she's borrowed Bruno Mars's piano and come up with something bang-on-trend in the form of 'Mr Know It All'. We defy anyone who isn't humming the chorus after the first listen. RC

RD: 'Got Me Burnin''
Grime trio RD - or Ruff Diamondz for those with time on their hands - have been looking to break the Top 40 since 2009. Given that their latest effort 'Got Me Burnin' has the twinkly garage beats of a Katy B hit melded with the melody of the Sugababes circa 2001, we're inclined to suggest that this is their strongest chance for a hit yet. RC

Birdy: 'People Help The People'
Continuing the trend of covering obscure songs and transforming them with her own elegant voice, Birdy has turned her attention to Cherry Ghost's 2007 hit 'Help The People' for her new single. The haunting vocal and delicate melody culminates into a eerie autumnal ballad, leaving us all the more excited for her first original effort. LC

Matt Cardle: 'Run For Your Life'
With this year's X Factor now in full swing, it would only be right for last year's champ to put out his new single. Even less surprising is that it sounds like Snow-Patrol-meets-Take-That (Gary Barlow wrote the song) and features a plaid-shirted Cardle in a nautical setting for the accompanying video. That said, the chorus isn't half bad, right? RC

Delilah: 'Go'
Currently labeled the music industry's best-kept secret, Delilah rose through the ranks of the industry via social networking to eventually land a spot on Chase & Status's recent hit 'Time'. Her solo debut is a contained, atmospheric and haunting reworking of Chaka Khan's 'Ain't Nobody' titled 'Go', which will be available to download on September 25. LC

Gym Class Heroes ft. Adam Levine: 'Stereo Hearts'
With Travie McCoy returning to the Gym Class fold after a handful of solo hits in 2010, the group have bagged the services of Maroon 5's Adam Levine for their new single 'Stereo Hearts'. The track is a combination of hip-hop beats, modish guitars and fluctuating strings - the result the perfect funk-bop song to round out the summer months. LC

Halfway to New York: 'What A Way To Go'
Up 'n' coming indie-poppers Halfway To New York will debut their first single proper in November, but after a successful stint on the live circuit have offered up a taster track - called 'What A Way To Go' - as a free download. The song is an ensemble of rousing guitars and light drums reminiscent of early Green Day. LC

Joe Goddard: 'Gabriel'
When he's not turning out hit records for Hot Chip or running his own record label, writer and producer Joe Goddard still finds time to put out his solo material, the latest of which is his new single 'Gabriel'. Aided by rising singer Valentina, the only downside to this acid house-inflected number is the dodgy music video. RC

S.C.U.M: 'Whitechapel'
S.C.U.M insist that they are not influenced by anyone musically, though if this new single and its predecessor 'Amber Hands' are anything to go by, they are '90s kids through and through. With its trippy beats and haunting vocals, it comes as little surprise that David Bowie producers Ken and Jolyon Thomas are listed in the song's credits. RC

Spector: 'What You Wanted'
Spector are on a mission to revive Britpop with the Pulp-esque guitars and anthemic choruses of their latest effort 'What You Wanted'. A worthy follow-up to their debut 'Never Fade Away', the five-piece release the song on September 19 - just in time for their UK-wide tour. LC
