Birdy

Newbie singer Birdy has already made quite an impression on the music industry with her debut single, a haunting rendition on Bon Iver's 'Skinny Love'.

She's since honed her knack for a clever cover song, going on to put her own twist on xx's 'Shelter' and, most recently, Cherry Ghost's 'People Help the People'.

With her self-titled debut album out next week, we at Digital Spy made it our business to find out more about the elusive star.

  • The 15-year-old's real name is Jasmine Van den Bogaerde, and she hails from Lymington, Hampshire.

  • Her stage name comes from her ability as a baby to open her mouth eye-poppingly wide when hungry.

  • She was spotted by a label at the age of 12 after putting videos of herself singing on YouTube.

  • Her debut album includes covers of The National, Phoenix and The Postal Service and one original song, called 'Without A Word'.

  • The reason for this, she says, was so she could concentrate on passing her GCSEs, adding: "It's just an introduction to my style."

  • Her influences include Paolo Nutini, Lykke Li, Adele and her mum - a classically trained concert pianist. "I've listened to her playing the piano all my life. And I love that," she says.

  • She has already started working on songs for her second album, revealing: "I've got loads, but they're not finished. They're just sketches of songs that I have in my head. I can't wait to start putting them together, and to see what people think of them."

  • Birdy's self-titled debut album is out on November 7. The single, 'People Help the People' is out now. Watch the official music video below:
