Ones to watch: Birdy

Newbie singer Birdy has already made quite an impression on the music industry with her debut single, a haunting rendition on Bon Iver's 'Skinny Love'.

She's since honed her knack for a clever cover song, going on to put her own twist on xx's 'Shelter' and, most recently, Cherry Ghost's 'People Help the People'.

With her self-titled debut album out next week, we at Digital Spy made it our business to find out more about the elusive star.

The 15-year-old's real name is Jasmine Van den Bogaerde, and she hails from Lymington, Hampshire.

Her stage name comes from her ability as a baby to open her mouth eye-poppingly wide when hungry.

She was spotted by a label at the age of 12 after putting videos of herself singing on YouTube.

Her debut album includes covers of The National, Phoenix and The Postal Service and one original song, called 'Without A Word'.

The reason for this, she says, was so she could concentrate on passing her GCSEs, adding: "It's just an introduction to my style."

Her influences include Paolo Nutini, Lykke Li, Adele and her mum - a classically trained concert pianist. "I've listened to her playing the piano all my life. And I love that," she says.

She has already started working on songs for her second album, revealing: "I've got loads, but they're not finished. They're just sketches of songs that I have in my head. I can't wait to start putting them together, and to see what people think of them."

Birdy's self-titled debut album is out on November 7. The single, 'People Help the People' is out now. Watch the official music video below:
