What is Kelly Clarkson's best single?

By
Kelly Clarkson 'Catch My Breath' video

Almost exactly ten years ago, Kelly Clarkson triumphed as the first winner of American Idol.

She's gone on to become one of the more successful winners of the long-running series and remains one of the very few who can boast international success.

To mark the occasion, she's put out a retrospective - the ambitiously-titled Greatest Hits: Chapter One - this week, which is headed up by new single 'Catch My Breath'.

But what is Kelly Clarkson's best single? We've listed our top five below and ask you to vote in our poll.

5. 'Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)' (released January 2012)
One of her more recent efforts, it cemented her status as a global superstar at a time when many had her out for the count. Its lyrics are suitably fitting for such an achievement (it was her first US number one in three years) and the chorus is so simple it hurts, but since when did we listen to Kelly Clarkson for anything other than a blazing power anthem?

4. 'Miss Independent' (released April 2003)
Kelly's first proper single post-Idol still holds up remarkably well today. Clarkson (who shares a co-write with Christina Aguilera(!) here) recently confessed that she cringes when listening back to it due to the over-use of auto-tune, but don't let that spoil it for you - it's still a brilliant pop gem.

3. 'My Life Would Suck Without You' (released January 2009)
After misstepping on 2007's My December album, Kelly needed a failsafe hit. The Max Martin-helmed and brilliantly-titled 'My Life Would Suck Without You' was it, topping the charts on US and UK shores. There was extensive debate at the time over whether this was the sort of song she wanted to release after the seriousness of its predecessor, but its breezy and lighthearted chorus still remains one of our favourites.

2. 'Behind These Hazel Eyes' (released February 2005)
It proved a slow burner at the time of release, but this track's greatness continues to be realised over time. Angry emo-pop was what its parent album Breakaway was all about; and it was perhaps best summarised on this number. What's more, its accompanying music video remains her best to date.

1. 'Since U Been Gone' (released November 2004)
The song's producers Max Martin and Dr Luke previously revealed that they were initially reluctant to give Clarkson the track, which they'd already offered to Pink and Hilary Duff(!). That said, Kelly has since stated that it was her idea to add "heavier guitars and harder drums on it", so everyone was a winner in the end. Given that it set the standard for modern pop anthems, we're surprised it never topped the charts, peaking at number two in the US. In short, it was the moment when we realised Kelly Clarkson was probably going to be around for a while.
