20 best singles of 2012 (20 - 11)

By and Lewis Corner
2012 marked another year of the singles chart being dominated by reality show acts, as well as the majority of tally-toppers being from overseas - in particular a certain Korean rapper.

From Coldplay's 'Paradise' scoring the first number one of 2012 to The Justice Collective's Christmas number one, there have been a total of 37 chart-topping songs over the last 12 months.

But what are Digital Spy's 20 favourite singles of the year? We've revealed our picks for 20 to 11 below:

20. Psy: 'Gangnam Style'
Released: September 4
Chart peak: No. 1
We said: "Like the novelty Party Rock Anthems, Macarenas and Cotton Eye Joes before him, we defy anyone who isn't still dancing along (stupidly) in years to come."

19. Little Mix: 'DNA'
Released: November 11
Chart peak: No. 3
We said: "The epic, operatic middle eight is a pop moment this time they can claim entirely as their own."

18. Gotye ft. Kimbra: 'Somebody That I Used To Know'
Released: February 5
Chart peak: No. 1
We said: "Timid electronic squiggles and hand-tapping beats result in a Bon Iver-styled ballad for the music-buying masses."

17. Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T & 2 Chainz: 'Mercy'
Released: April 3
Chart peak: No. 82
We said: "Yeezy has teamed up with hip-hop pals Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz to deliver a stripped-down rap-athon with a hypnotic, beeping riff."

16. MIA: 'Bad Girls'
Released: January 31
Chart peak: No. 43
We said: 'Bad Girls' serves as a timely reminder that she can cook up a chart-friendly hit when and if she so chooses."

15. Rihanna: 'Diamonds'
Released: September 30
Chart peak: No. 1
We said: "[It] steers the polar opposite from her recent clubbier efforts and adopts a rarely-seen softer and more prolific edge."

14. Major Lazer: 'Get Free'
Released: May 18
Chart peak: No. 67
We said: "Fortunately, its bouncy, reggae-flecked beats also work perfectly for a post-party hangover."

13. Florence + the Machine: 'No Light, No Light'
Released: January 15
Chart peak: No. 50
We said: "Welch belts over thundering tribal beats and flowing harp strings over her frustration about the state of a fragile relationship."

12. Girls Aloud: 'Something New'
Released: November 18
Chart peak: No. 2
We said: "Like so many of their previous Xenomania-created gems, its head-spinning structure takes time to grow - but when it does, the result almost feels like they never really left us."

11. Robbie Williams: 'Candy'
Released: October 28
Chart peak: No. 1
We said: "Robbie chants on a bouncy, playground chant of a chorus brassier than his stage persona - and there within lies the charm."
