The crowd say bo?

Hmmm. Craig David played a showcase of his new album Trust Me at Ronnie Scott's last night, giving us a performance that contained more dodgy moments that the England football team's back four. While new single 'Hot Stuff' was glorious (so good, he played it twice in fact) there were still far too many crooning, soppy moments from Craig that, frankly, we thought had been packed off to the musical sin bin along with Brian Harvey and Brian McFadden.
However, let's not dwell on the negatives - we're feeling in a chirpy, forgiving mood here at The Sound - and let's talk about what was great about last night. Firstly his band. Dressed in matching killer black suits, they were tighter than Johnny Borrell's keks and on his up-tempo numbers like 'Trust Me', 'She's On Fire' and 'Six Of One Thing', they added enough beef to get even the more dour-faced audience members shaking-a-tail feather. Note to Craig: More funky, soul party anthems - less, old-hat R'n'B nonsense that went out in the rubbish with R Kelly back in the mid-90s.
Other highlights? Well we have to confess to a little guilty sin of waving our hands like we just didn't care during his run through 'Seven Days' and 'Fill Me In', while we can't possibly not mention his duet with 16-year-old Rita Ora on new track and second-single-in-waiting 'Awkward'. Craig's description of her as a modern day cross between Mariah and Chaka Khan filled us with dread, but when the sassy and stunning Ora wandered on stage we were captivated. Imagine a cross between Shakira and Black Eyed Peas Fergie with a voice to match either. She should be a star.
And for those worried after yesterday's blog that Craig had developed an unhealthy fascination with MC Hammer, well we can confirm there wasn't a pair of baggy trousers in sight. Don't believe us? Then have a gander at the video for his official photoshoot. Enjoy:
