Are Leona's new songs any good?

Published Friday, Apr 11 2008, 15:57 BST | By Nick Levine | 10 comments
You might remember reading a while back that Leona Lewis had recorded two new songs for the US release of her Spirit album. Well, Spirit "dropped" across the pond earlier this week, meaning these smokin' new tracks are now available for your listening pleasure. Are they worth hunting down? We've given them a few spins to find out.

'Misses Glass'
With its quivering synths and snappy beats, this is probably the most urban and "American-sounding" track Leona has recorded. Lyrically, she's in familiar territory here, trilling on (and on) about a destructive relationship that's left her "broken like gla-ha-hass". Though Leona hits a fairly extraordinary note towards the end, 'Misses Glass' is too derivative to get properly excited about.

'Forgive Me'
A.k.a The One Written And Produced By Akon. 'Forgive Me' nicks the church organ from the 'Bleeding Love' intro and really goes to town with it, before morphing into a synthier, more eighties-sounding version of Gwen Stefani's 'The Sweet Escape' - not coincidentally, also written and produced by Akon. The lack of originality notwithstanding, it's nice to hear Leona playing a different role for a change. Here, she's a no-good-cheating hussie telling her man she's "gotta get it from someone else". Leona, we never knew you had it in you!

The conclusion
Middling album tracks rather than standout singles, it's not worth buying the Spirit import just to hear these songs. However, that's not to say they aren't worth a little listen on the internet.

Have you heard Leona Lewis' new songs? What do you think of them? Just hit the usual button to have your say.

They are great tracks but need a lot of listening to get the hook. That makes them ideal for the plate-techtonically paced US singles' charts IMO.

no i think they are boring and so is she, she can sing dont get me wrong but to compare her to the greats mariah and whitney is going overboard, mariah has sold 160 million records and looks to sell even more with the new album, leona cant hit the notes mariah can and the way she hits them so no comparison and whitney are you mad she a soul singer and leona hasnt got no soul. for me shes not even better than alicia keys now thats soul. if she doesnt work with the right people then i dont see her selling over 60 million records. her voice is amazing but her songs are boring.

OMGGGG are you kidding these two songs are fantastic, not at all 'middling album tracks', I definitely think they are single worthy and could well predict seeing 'Forgive Me' being another worldwide smashhhhhhh

I have not heard either one of them yet. I just bought her CD today on my lunch break. I happened to be watching a video show on TV and saw Bleeding Love. I don't buy a lot of music but I must tell you I absolutely LOVE that song that is why I bought it. It is the most moving song I heard in a long time. I am at work now and can't wait to get home to hear the entire CD. She is a star!!!!!!

I love both tracks! Think MG and FM bring a fantastic new dimension to the album and either could be massive worldwide hits if she releases one of them! :D
