Are Lily Allen's new songs any good?

Published Tuesday, Apr 22 2008, 11:43 BST | By Nick Levine | 20 comments
So, we take it you've heard about Lily Allen's new direction by now. No, we don't mean her freshly-dyed blonde hair - though obviously that's very exciting if you like that sort of thing. We're actually talking about the two new songs she's posted on her MySpace page. Though they're a tad rough round the edges - "They are just at demo stage so don't be too hard on them," advises Lily - both songs are pretty fantastic.

'I Don't Know' finds Lily getting inside the head of a shallow, vacuous fame-seeker. Its lyrics are sharper than an Essex girl's stiletto, with this cutting couplet being especially on the money: "I want lots of clothes and f***loads of diamonds, I heard people die while they're trying to find them."

'I Could Say' is more personal, an optimistic post-breakup song on which Lily begins to realise that she's better off without her ex. "Since you've gone I've lost that chip on my shoulder, since you've gone I feel like I've gotten older," she croons, sounding both sad and hopeful.

As promised, both songs point to a new direction for Lily: more mature, more reflective, more electronic. However, anxious fans shouldn't smash their copies of Alright, Still in protest - the gorgeous melodies on display here prove that 'Littlest Things' was no songwriting fluke from Miss Allen. In fact, after listening to 'I Don't Know' and 'I Could Say', album number two can't come soon enough.

I LOVE THEM. WOW. Her new songs are simply awesome. Esp "F*** You (Guess Who Batman)". She still has her ability to make such catchy and bouncy songs with the most perfect yet nasty lyrics. And in songs such as "Everybody's At It", she sings about real world problems. I can NOT wait till it's released.

Yes! I don't know, I could say, and who'd of known are a very good direction for Lily Allen, (theres disappointment, in GWB.) but thats o.k. I don't believe that who'd of known sounds like anybody, but Lily Allen. if you disagree thats o.k maybe it's not me it's you!

Alright, Stil is a realy great album and i love her ska musics (Friend Of Mine, LDN, Smile)... Her new one sounds a little less perfect, but its also very nice "I Could Say" isnt that good, I would say a 3/5, but "I Dont Know" its a bit better and the lyrics are fantastic, her new song is called "Guess Who Batman" and its my favourite one, you got to listen to it...

I felt speculative of her new material and was really hoping she wasn't going to produce a pile of rubbish, like a lot of acts do for their 2nd album. These 2 demos prove hopeful, deep down I knew she wouldn't let us down!

she should concentrate on her music, and stop courting the media, it will only end in tears. songs are good

This new music is really really good...I can not wait for the new album!! The electro-insipired "I don't Know" Is a summer chill out...The "I could Say" is probably the most mature and raw we have ever heard Lily, I adore that song...Well Done Lily :)

A breath of fresh air, in a time when radio1's playlists are full of pretentious idiots. These couple of songs are pretty good, it'l be interesting to hear the final versions. Think "I don't know" is the best of the two, probably gonna be a single, can't wait.

"more mature, more reflective, more electronic... " More s***e.

Who cares what the haters say, these songs are really good and a lot better than some of the stuff on her first album. I like the direction she's taken and can't wait for the new album

Not sure anything this silly girl does deserves credit.. it wasn't long enough she slagged off really talented people for no apparent reason, showing off her spoiltness and her lack of decency.. sorry to see what has happened to her in her personal life recently that was awful. But as for her music its all a bag of w*nk!
AJ, London, on April 22nd, 2008
The lyrics are predictable. As for 'getting inside the head of a shallow, vacuous fame'seeker', that's not hard as she's shown herself to be just that: getting pictures taken with Agyness Deyn laughing like they're really best mates, slagging off everyone then saying she's changed, then continuing to do so etc. If she's so 'right on the money' about wanting diamonds that people die trying to find, why does she wear them anyway, and why doesn't she try doing something about the problem.

I'm glad to see she's maturing but I quickly have to say how much I hate her chatshow. She should stick to music because it is where her strengths lie. She should never have done it.

Just imagine if she had talent and wasn't bankrolled by her father and the media, she'd be some poor singer playing the local pub because the entertainment world is currently full of untalented idiots bankrolled by their famous family..
