The new Coldplay single: Is it any good?

Our verdict: it's a definite hit that fits snugly alongside the best material from their career. Built around Will Champion's tribal drum thumps and a swirling wall of guitars, producer Brian Eno has helped turn the band into the U2-style stadium conquerors that X&Y never quite managed. The usual piano tinkling, falsetto vocals and funky Jonny Buckland guitar solo are all present and correct, but, intriguingly, Chris Martin's lyrics seem to be more political than ever before. What could he mean by the future being "architectured" by a "carnival of idiots on show"? Hmm...

Maybe we can't judge the whole album through one song, but "Violet Hill" just doesn't sound like Coldplay anymore. Disappointed :(

I was expecting so much more. But they have disappointed me. Unless the album is absolutely amazing I doubt I will even buy it.

I really like the song. Initially, I thought it was nothing more than good, but I've listened to it a few more times and am becoming more and more pleased with it. It sounds like their old stuff in Martin's voice, but that's about it. I think the style is different from the rest of their albums. In short, I think it's a great song and am looking forward to the album.

Dont believe the hype, this is not a good song. If you are a big coldplay fan, the song is not so drastically different to make you switch it off - but from a neutral music lovers point of view it is pretty bland. Boring verse followed by a potentially interesting chorus that unfortunatley is only sung once before returning to the verse again. Repeat and then onto an embarrassing guitar solo by anyones standards. The end - just Martin and a piano - strips the song down and it actually sounds quite good, like a hidden track or b-side but nothing special. Coldplay fans will love it - but as with most bands, their hardcore following will love any old rubbish they put out. Coldplay haters will continue to hate , and will have good ammo for their rants. Nuetral music fans will be bored and soon forget the song.
