The Scarlett Johansson single
Published Thursday, May 1 2008, 15:36 BST | By Nick Levine | 15 comments
As you've no doubt heard, Scarlett Johansson is the latest Hollywood A-lister to play rockstar. She's actually recorded an album of Tom Waits covers, so the words "danceable", "radio-friendly" and "a barrel of laughs" are unlikely to spring to mind while listening to it.
Lead single 'Falling Down', featuring backing vocals from David Bowie, is a surprisingly subdued debut: lo-fi and ruminative, but with a real sense of drama towards the end. Scarlett's voice lacks finesse, but it's tougher, huskier and generally less flimsy than we might have expected.
The video is presumably intended to look chic and arty in, y'know, a lo-tech kinda way, but actually it just feels a bit cheap. That said, it's worth watching to the finish to see Salman Rushdie plant a few smackers on Scarlett's neck. Well, who can blame him?
What do you think of the Scarlett Johansson single? Is 'Falling Down' what you were expecting from her? Just hit the usual button to have your say.

The music is not bad, though it drags from one point on. Her voice....well, I had a goldfish who could sing better! The problem is I think she is overrated as a woman too! She is pretty but Angelina Jolie or Monica Bellucci she will never be!

I suppose it helps to have friends in high places to support your arty look, but once you ignore the presence of the respected luminaries you're just left with some contrived and self conscious 'art' posturing. The word pseud comes to mind.

Well they spent about $100 making the video in the current trendy amateur style, and after listening to the song, I would say they spent even less on that. It's clear she is relying on her celebrity status to sell records, as her singing certainly won't.

God this is awful. Why? Why would you create such an awful thing? I thought the weird voice at the beginning was going to change... sadly not. The video is very weird as well. Is she trying to freak us all out? Only few are extremely talented in the many areas of art. And she is not one of those few.

This is one of the worst attempts of a singer I've heard in my life. Even Paris Hilton's song was better. It's sad how anyone with a pretty face, enough fame and good contacts can get a record deal these days, while real talented girls are singing to themselves in their basements.

I don't know why there was so much hype around her new album because this is dreadful. I think it's appropriate to say 'Stick to your day job love' lol.

Sucks beyond belief-and I only heard the first 20 seconds! Mariah and co and nothing to worry about.
