Another middle-aged woman hits the dancefloor

The last time we heard from Cyndi Lauper she'd been involved in a rather unfortunate incident at an outdoor concert in the States. Just as Cyndi was about to launch into a real belter of a note - open wiiide! - a bird flying overhead decided to plop in her mouth. Being the unflappable showbiz trouper that she is, Cyndi simply wiped her chops and carried on singing.

Maybe having the roof of your mouth coated in pigeon poop brings good luck, because Cyndi's new album is looking like a return to form. Bring Ya To The Brink is a dance-electro-pop affair featuring songwriting contributions from Basement Jaxx, Max Martin, Robyn's mate Kleerup, electropop stars Dragonette and an assortment of trendy DJs. That's a far more interesting creative team, we might note, than Madonna assembled for her Hard Candy album.

Rather generously, Cyndi's popped six songs from the album onto her MySpace page - and very good they are too. Our favourites are 'Into The Nightlife', which has a terrific arms-in-the-air chorus, and 'Same Ol' Story', a sod-the-bloke-I'm-going-out-dancing anthem with a naughty word in the chorus. 'Grab A Hold', which sounds a little bit like Erasure, is also well worth a listen.

Brink Ya To The Brink doesn't have a UK release date yet - it's "coming soon", according to the latest release schedule - but it's out in the US on Tuesday.

Have you heard Cyndi Lauper's new songs? Are you excited about her comeback? Use the space below to have your say.

Cyndi Lauper is AMAZING this album needs to chart, BRING HER ON THE CHARTS! "Into The Nightlife" is the best song of the year and "Echo" if it were to get some air play --people would love it! A pop icon is back go Cyndi!!!!! (way better than "Hard Candy")

I have had the new album for a couple of days, and LOVE IT! I saw her twice this year in Australia, and she sang some of the new songs live. She was amazing! I hope the new album is a hit for her (it should be). I think the best song is "Set Your Heart"
