A kinky pop song in the US charts?

There's a song in the US top 40 at the moment called 'I Kissed A Girl'. Nothing remarkable about that, you might think, unless 'Kissed' has replaced a rather naughtier word in the "radio edit" of a 50 Cent / Flo Rida / Snoop Dogg single.

Actually, 'I Kissed A Girl' is a little bit remarkable, because it's sung by Katy Perry, a female singer-songwriter. A girl singing a song about kissing another girl: does that make it lesbo-pop? Well, not really, because Katy's kinky revelation comes with three provisos:

1. She got a little bit drunk before she kissed a girl.
2. Just because she kissed a girl "don't mean I'm in love tonight", you know.
3. She may have kissed a girl, but she's still got a boyfriend.

The merest shred of research reveals that this Katy Perry character has released a single with an attention-grabbing title before. Its name? 'Ur So Gay'.

Given her previous form, it will be interesting to see whether Katy follows 'I Kissed A Girl' with another titillating/risqué single. Could she write a pop song about incest? Light bondage perhaps? 'My Cattle's Making Eyes At Me (And I'm Not Sure I Can Resist)'? The mind really does boggle.

Anyway, whatever you think of its subject matter, 'I Kissed A Girl' is actually a pretty decent electro-glammy pop single: like Goldfrapp writing a song for The Hills soundtrack. The video - which doesn't feature any tongue action, lesbian or otherwise - appears below:

What do you think of 'I Kissed A Girl'? Is it fun and cheeky or just a little bit desperate? Use the space below to have your say.
