That 'Singin' In The Rain' song

A couple of weeks ago Big Brother reject Chanelle Hayes was willing to simulate sex with a puppet to nab some extra publicity for her debut single. Unfortunately for her, the skimpy knickers and excessive pouting could only bag 'I Want It' a number 63 chart placing. Instead of wasting her time cavorting with glove puppets, what she should have been doing was calling the Britain's Got Talent finalists and begging for a cheap plug.

The reason? Well, body-poppin' teen George Sampson, the winner of the ITV1 variety/reality show, looks set to bag '90s dance stars Mint Royale a belated number one. 14 million viewers watched the teen back-flip and snake-hip his way to victory on Saturday - and many of them have been logging onto iTunes ever since. The result? The track he danced to, 'Singin' In The Rain' from Royale's 2005 LP See You In The Morning, is now rocketing up the Top 40.

The track only reached number 20 when it was released three years ago, but now it's outselling Rihanna 2:1 at the top of the chart. Is it any good? Well, it's a pretty bog-standard mash-up, to be honest, little more than Gene Kelly's 1952 classic with some uninspired dance beats plastered behind it. But with the force of Simon Cowell and millions of reality TV viewers behind it, who are we to argue? For the record, though, we'd be more excited by the prospect of a record from fellow Talent finalist Gin The Dog.

Why do you think of the Mint Royale single? Does it deserve to be number one? Use the space below to have your say.
