That 'Singin' In The Rain' song

Published Wednesday, Jun 4 2008, 13:32 BST | By Alex Fletcher | 19 comments
A couple of weeks ago Big Brother reject Chanelle Hayes was willing to simulate sex with a puppet to nab some extra publicity for her debut single. Unfortunately for her, the skimpy knickers and excessive pouting could only bag 'I Want It' a number 63 chart placing. Instead of wasting her time cavorting with glove puppets, what she should have been doing was calling the Britain's Got Talent finalists and begging for a cheap plug.

The reason? Well, body-poppin' teen George Sampson, the winner of the ITV1 variety/reality show, looks set to bag '90s dance stars Mint Royale a belated number one. 14 million viewers watched the teen back-flip and snake-hip his way to victory on Saturday - and many of them have been logging onto iTunes ever since. The result? The track he danced to, 'Singin' In The Rain' from Royale's 2005 LP See You In The Morning, is now rocketing up the Top 40.

The track only reached number 20 when it was released three years ago, but now it's outselling Rihanna 2:1 at the top of the chart. Is it any good? Well, it's a pretty bog-standard mash-up, to be honest, little more than Gene Kelly's 1952 classic with some uninspired dance beats plastered behind it. But with the force of Simon Cowell and millions of reality TV viewers behind it, who are we to argue? For the record, though, we'd be more excited by the prospect of a record from fellow Talent finalist Gin The Dog.

Why do you think of the Mint Royale single? Does it deserve to be number one? Use the space below to have your say.

Definately a deserved No1. It makes a change - even if it is 3 years on from it's original release!

Don't support the charts then Elliot! The joy of the UK chart is that any song can get to number 1! It's hardly a difficult chart to break is it? Cheeky girls, Chico, Steps....the list goes on. Many songs have been at number 1 that I HATE and still I don't take it as a personal attack against my tastes! Many songs I love have been held oputside the top 5 or even 10 by tracks that I feel are truly awful, oh well, I still have the track end enjoy listening to it! This song by the way is far from awful, and so what if millions like it and you don't! Just turn off the radio after number 2.

Has any one noticed the backing to singin in the rain is New Years Day by U2
mamaLia, on June 8th, 2008
Is this not a mix with New years day by U2 and gene kelly

I really like this song, but would only listen to it at a club or party because it is a dance song and there are not that many words to sing to. George was brilliant, and that was the reason it's gone to number 1.

i think that the single is fantastic and the best song this year im really glad george sampson won!!
Laura, Southampton, on June 6th, 2008
Love the track, very catchy and if they get a no. 1 out of it why not??? Good on them I say!!!!
Mark, Birmingham, on June 5th, 2008
I don't think it does. Not properly earned really. It's only there because it was on the show.
Nick, London, on June 4th, 2008
Crikey. It's as if everyone has forgotten about that Volkswagen advert already! Nobody gave two hoots about the track when it was on telly once every fifteen minutes.
Mel, London, on June 4th, 2008
I think the thing is, people loved hearing it on Britain's Got Talent. I thought it was really catchy and couldn't get the tune out of my head after Saturday's final.
Simon, Brighton, on June 4th, 2008
What a crock of ______. It's not a bad tune, but it's certainly not worthy of being number one!!
lauren, on June 4th, 2008
singin in the rain is my favourite musical so i wouldn't mind this being number 1!!!
Joel, South Wales, on June 4th, 2008
I heard this song when it came out, I remember hearing it in the cinema. Good song, they deserve the no. 1 spot.
Elliot, Essex, on June 4th, 2008
Absolutely not! Give sum proper UK talent a chance! Jay Sean. Craig David, Duffy, Taio Cruz! I cannot believe this might get to number one! If this gets to number one I will never support the UK charts anymore! I think it is a disgrace!
