A conman who claimed to be Status Quo member Francis Rossi has duped Dover officials out of a year's worth of VIP perks.

The faker, who said he preferred to be called Graham to remain incognito, explained that he lacked the singer's trademark ponytail because it was simply a gimmick attached to his head before concerts.

He told council bosses that he would perform at the town's festival and bring celebrity friends Paul McCartney, Charlotte Church and Brian May along with him.

However, residents worked out that he was not who he seemed when the conman failed to show at the event.

The real Francis Rossi joked: "I'll never know how he knew the secret about my ponytail."
