Italian engineers turn water into wine
Published Wednesday, Oct 8 2008, 14:13 BST | By Alex Fletcher
Italian engineers accidentally sent wine through Marino residents' water supplies earlier this week.
The townspeople regularly gather at the Fountain of the Four Moors in October to celebrate the Sagra dell' Uva wine harvest.
It usually culminates with 3,000 litres of the year's new wine being spurted from the fountain, but a technical failure resulted in engineers being sent to investigate the pipes.
However, they accidentally sent the flow of wine into domestic water supplies while attempting to fix the fountain, reports The Times.
Residents apparently noticed the smell of alcohol coming out of their taps and began filling receptacles with the drink.
Marino's mayor confessed that the events would be "talked about in these parts for some time to come".
The first recorded Sagra dell' Uva took place in 1573 and features stalls, floats, bands, parades and grapes draped everywhere.
